Language focus – Comparison sentences
- Start with the subject:
Subject 1 + be + as
as + common/ popular/prevalent + as
as + subject 2.

- Start with the adjective
As many + subject 1 + V + as + subject 2.

Fewer than

Eg: More red cars are sold than blue cars.

- Start with “There”
There + be + as many + subject 1 + V-ing + as + subject 2.

Rule: compare within each group of columns, rather than among the groups.

Describing a table
In Writing Task 1, you may be required to describe a table. In fact, this type of
report is very similar to describing a bar chart. Then you can apply the same
strategy mentioned above of the bar chart to assist you with the report of the table.
See an example below.
The table can be visualized into a bar chart like this:
Useful age expressions
- People who were 11-14 years old
- People aged 11 – 14
- People at the age of 11 – 14
- 11-14 year old people
- The 11-24 year olds
- People whose age was 11 – 14
- People in the 11 – 14 age group

Structures for proportion
1. Red was the most popular color, with about 49%.

Yellow was the second most popular color.
Blue was the third most popular color.

Analyzing pie chart
- Focus: Proportion, comparison
- Describe the greatest proportion first
- Then combine the small ones together
- Include data for quarter/half
- Ignore category “others“
Note that the second pie chart is about the forecast in the future (2017). Use the
language of prediction studied in the homework of Lesson 5 to help you. Now, work
with your partner or in group, spend 20 minutes completing this task.

Action plan for Matching names

Note: There is only ONE answer for each question. You may use any letter more

· Put a box around the names of the people in the passage. This will help you
find the answers more quickly.
· Underline key words or phrases in the statements that will help you match
the statements and the people.
· Read around each of the name you have marked in the passage and read
the list of statements quickly to see whether any of them matches.
· Some sentences will be complete paraphrases of the text so you need to be
able to recognize meaning.
· If you think two names fit any of the statements, you will need to come back
