Transcultural Nursing
Module 1

The first figure is about the theory of Transcultural Nursing of Madeleine Leininger Sunrise
Enabler Model. This model is used for the cultural evaluations of the patient. In the model, there are
factors that should be assessed to know or determine what are the traditional and professional practices
of the patient. Leininger’s model is used to avoid the stereotyping and bias while providing health care
to the patient. Nurses should take care of the physical, physiological, spiritual and also the cultural need
of the patient for effective healing. There are three modes of nursing decisions and actions. The first one
is the culture care preservation and maintenance. It refers to the support to the cultural practices of the
patient as long as it will bring relief to the patient. The second one is the cultural accommodation or
negotiation that refers the support of the patient and the family in the carrying out of the cultural
practices that will not cause harm to the patient and to any healthcare staff. The third one is the cultural
repatterning and restructuring refers to the efforts to give the patient-centered care and suggesting
change to the patient’s cultural activities that can harm the patient or anyone around them.

The second figure is about the Transcultural Interprofessional Practice (TIP) Model of
Andrews/Boyle. The cultural context consists of people’s health related values, attitudes, beliefs and
practices. It consists of environmental, social, economic, religious, philosophical moral, legal, political,
educational, biological, genetic, technological factors. The second figure is about interprofessional
health care team where the client is the core. This is where the partnership between support persons,
family, religious healers and healthcare team work together to provide the quality healthcare that the
patient really needs. Communication, cooperation, and rapport is being build in this figure. The third
figure of TIP model is the communication between the patient, family, religious or folk healers and the
healthcare provider. It includes the languages, the greetings, expressions, gestures, posture, touch,
modesty, etc. The fourth figure is about the problem solving process of TIP model. This is where the
healthcare provider will determine the needs of the patient. It is done step-by-step: assessment, goal
setting, planning, implementing and evaluation of the care plan. In assessment, the health care provider
will obtain data from the patient to identify what is the problem of the patient. Setting goal is also
important so that in evaluation, nurses can determine whether the goal is met or not. Planning what are
the interventions they should do. Implementation of the interventions with the cooperation of the
patient and lastly the evaluation.
