CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

A. Research Background

According to Tarigan (2020) speaking is a language skill that is developed in

child life, which is produced by listening skill, and at that period speaking skill is

learned. Language also can be define as a finite system of elements and principles

that make it possible for speakers to construct sentences to do particular

communicative jobs(Raplh,2013). The part of the system that allows speakers to

produce and interpret grammatical sentences is called grammatical

competence.Speaking skills is the skills that the students need to have in the learning

language. speaking is most important skills that the teacher need to have because with

speaking the learner will be said to be able to speak, speaking english as a foreign

language especially in indonesia a little bit difficut to learn for another people who not

familiar with the situation or the circumstances of the environment using English.

Videos is the media that can the teacher use to improve their speaking skills.

making fun learning process with provide some video to teaching the students is

efective to make the students not get bored with the learning process. Prambudi

(2013) said that the most effective way to learn English is to seriously listen and

watching the movies. In this way, mastery of pronunciation or word pronunciation

will be easy to reach. Learners can also know how to pronounce the pronunciation of

the original native speaker, so that over time they will get used to pronouncing it

clearly and correctly.

The junior high school In Sepang village, Busungbiu districts that located in

Bali at SMP N 3 Busungbiu, had dificulties in speaking. The problem are first they

still afraid to try speaking abaout what does the students need to say. Students tend to

2
be afraid to make mistakes when it comes to speaking in English so confidence

students is very low. Second is the facilite at school still not provide to the teacher and

students, students still using text book method to learning english speaking they just

repeat after the teacher said without know the audio from native speaker.

B. Research question

1. How can the teacher impliminting videos to improving students speaking skill in

SMP N 3 Busungbiu ?

2. How can the teacher handle their students and train their students to participate in

speaking activities in English by using video?

3. What are the dificulties when the students using video to improve speaking

skills ?

C. Problem Identification

The speaking problems from the students in SMP N 3 busungbiu they still

confuse to try to sepak in front of the class because their vocabullary, grammar and

pronouncation from their speaking skills still less from the word complete. So the

video will to be the media that can help students to solve their problem and they are

can improve their speaking skills and be brave to speaking english litle by little.

D. Research Objectives

General objective is to understand the implementation of videos teaching

speaking skills in SMP N 3 Busungbiu and for Specific objectives: 1). To improving

students speaking skills using the video, 2) To making the students participate to

speak in front of the class, 3) To solve the dificulties while providing the video on

process speaking learning.

E. Research significant

Theoritical significance is to improve EFL quality, especially in speaking the uses of

videos in SMP N 3 Busungbiu and for the Practical significance: 1). for EFL students,

3
to improve the students speaking skills . For EFL teachers : 1). to improve quality of
teaching speaking by using the videos media.

F. Research Scope

The proposed research is limited on speaking through videos SMP N 3

Busungbiu the research from the object has been research by the researcher in Bali but
not in Sepang village.
G. Assumptions and Limitations

It is assumed that the EFL teacher will prepare and implement self-talk using

video at SMP N 3 Busungbiu. The results of the proposed research are limited to the

implementation of self-talk via video.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A. Definitions of Key Term

1. Implementation
According to Rudd, Mills, & Patrick (2008), the implementation is an act of
planning to achieve the goals that have been set. It refers to action on the problem
at hand. Then, make a strategy or develop a plan to solve the problem.
Implementation is generally defined as actions taken by each individual to achieve
goals in accordance with decisions in action.
2. Improving
Improving is a set of linked ideas about how to improve some aspect of what is
happening and how to reslove some problem to make what we need to improve
running well.
3. Videos
Some media digital which is provide object with the audio and the object can be
record and it’s to be videos.
4. Speaking
Speaking is defined as an interactive process of constructing meaning that involve
producing, receiving and processing information. Its form and meaning are
dependent on the context in which it occurs, the participants, and the purposes of
speaking (Burns & Joyce, 1997).
B. Theoretical Review
1. Theory of speaking
According to Harmer (2007: 284) speaking is the ability to speak fluent
and know about the language features but it also to make the knowledge
improve by adding some information and can transmitting information as
orally.
Richards and Renandya (2002: 204) state that effective oral
communication requires the ability to use the language appropriately in social
interactions that involves not only verbal communication but also
paralinguistic elements of speech such as pitch, stress, and intonation.
Moreover, nonlinguistice elements such as gestures, body language, and
expressions are needed in conveying messages directly without any

5
accompanying speech. Brown (2007: 237) states that social contact in
interactive language functions is a key importance and in which it is not what
you say that counts but how you say it what you convey with body language,
gestures, eye contact, physical distance and other nonverbal messages
a. The Goals of Speaking
- To communicate
- To share the information
- To persuade people
- To entertain
b. Learning Materials
The material that teacher provide by using video to teach the students
and the material that teacher give such as, word, verb, conversation and
more with descriptive text.
c. Learning Media
The media that teacher use in Junior High School are LCD, Laptop,
speaker’s , work sheet and handphone.
2. Teaching speaking though video
when teach the students by using the video students need to be able to
have internet Data to make a conncetion to youtube or to download that the
video. Videos is very usefull strategies to make students understand about the
langugae by native speaker. When native speaker say the word and sentence
for the first way the students maybe still confuse but if the teacher teach
student litle by litle to listen and try to speak it, students will think it to be
habitual way to speak.
C. Empirical Review

Putrawansyah, Andi (2020) learn how to implement video or video from

youtube to improve students' speaking in speaking the method used is the

experimental method or pree test. The test is divided into pretest and posttest. In

pretest, students are given a picture about the procedure text and after that the

students speak orally in front of the class. In the posttest, students were given three

pictures about the procedure text and students must choose one of the three images

6
that have been selected then speak orally in front of the class. Based on the results

of the pre test and post test, it was found that t count was 15.64 with using 0.05 as

the significant level with 29 degrees of freedom (df = 30 – 1 = 29, then obtained t

table 2,045 from the average pretest score of 3.97 and posttest 5.12. This shows

that youtube video material has a significant effect on improving skills speaking

procedure text in terms of vocabulary and pronunciation.

D. Research Novelty

Previous rearchers focus on teaching speaking using videos and these limited on

implementing videos aplication in teaching speaking.

E. Conceptual Framework

In junior high school in Sepang village. Speaking actually is important to the students

or to the teacher and speaking need’s to be mastered in junior high school. To go to

the next step in senior high school speaking can be sharpened from junior high school.

But based on the observation that we made the students in sepang village still confuse

to understand the word and sentence , also their grammar still irregular. Not all the

students can’t to speak english but almost of the student still shy to speak and try to

speaking because they afraid to make a mistake. So video can be effective way’s to

make students speaking and try to repeat the speaker said.

F. Hypothesis

Teacher implementing video to all of the students in another class to make students

speaking as well.
