ACTIVE – PASSIVE

Active form

In active sentences, the thing doing the action is the subject of the sentence and the thing
receiving the action is the object. Most sentences are active.

 Thing doing action + verb + thing receiving action

Examples :
1. The professor teaches the student
Subject doing action verb object receiving action

In passive sentences, the thing receiving the action is the subject of the sentence and
the thing doing the action is optionally included near the end of the sentence. You can use the
passive form it you think that the thing receiving the action is more important or should be
emphasized. You can also use the passive form it you do not know who is doing the action or
if you do not want to mention who is doing action.

Passive form

 Thing receiving action + be + past participle of verb + by + thing doing action

Example :
1. The student are taught by the professor
Subject receiving action Passive verb Doing action

Nother Example ( Contoh-contoh macam tenses ):

1. Once a week, the house is cleaned by Tom

2. Right now, the letter is being written by Sarah
3. The car was repaired by Sam
4. Recently, the work has beeb being done by John
5. The work will be finished by 5.00 PM

Rewrite the following sentences as suggested:

2. The girl drove the blue car.
The blue car was driven bt the girl
3. They have collected enough money.
Enough money has been collected by them
4. They will open a new restaurant.
A new restaurant will be opened by them
5. The little boy can draw pictures.
Pictures can be drawn by little boy
6. The guard watched the prisoner.
The prissoner was watched by the guard
7. They will not play soccer.
Soccer will not be played by them
8. They believe that he writes good poems.
They believe that the good poems are written by him
