Types of Columns in Journalism

Scott Neuffer

What is a column in journalism?

In journalism, a column is a recurring feature by the same author in a
newspaper, magazine or website. In contrast to objective news stories,
columns are characterized by the voice, personality and opinions of the
writer. The writer can be a journalist or an expert in the particular field about
which he or she is writing. Though given creative leeway in how they write,
columnists are usually assigned to specific sections, such as sports or politics.

Sports Columns
Sports columns offer analysis and opinion on sports news and trends. While
sports reporters cover events in real time, sports columnists explore the
broader implications of those events. Bleacher Report columnist Peter
Panacy, for example, follows the San Francisco 49ers and analyzes patterns
over the course of several games, such as problems with the defense’s pass
rushing. Sports columns can also address controversial issues in the sports
world, from steroid use in Major League Baseball to head concussions in the
National Football League.

Political Columns
Political columns have a long-standing history of providing partisan
viewpoints and arguments, as well as analysis of political news. Political
columnists often use wit and satire to criticize politicians or certain policies.
Maureen Dowd of "The New York Times" once likened presidential hopeful
John Edwards to a Ken doll. Large publications feature opposing columnists
as a way to balance political commentary. George Will of the "Washington
Post," for instance, offers a conservative viewpoint of current events, while
Eugene Robinson of the same paper offers a more liberal perspective.

Advice Columns
Advice columns are designed to provide readers with help and guidance on
specific topics. Advice columnists are usually experts in their respective fields.
A columnist with expertise in auto repair might tell readers how to diagnose
engine problems or change their oil. A lawyer with expertise in probate or
estate law might instruct readers how to make a will. Advice columnists also
solicit questions from readers and try to address those questions in an
ongoing dialogue. A well-known example of this latter type is “Dear Abby,” a
personal advice column penned by the late Pauline Friedman Phillips.

Humor Columns
Humor columns are designed to inform the readership and tickle their funny
bones at the same time. Like stand-up comedians for newspapers, humor
columnists explore current events with wit, playfulness and levity, providing
comic relief from hard news. Perhaps more than other columnists, humorists
are known for their distinct voice and personality, and for exploring difficult
issues in funny ways. Dave Barry of "The Miami Herald" is a prime example.
Nationally syndicated for more than 20 years, his humor column addressed
everything from international economics to exploding toilets.

Local Columns
Local columns can mix humor, human interest stories, news and political
coverage, even sports, as long as the content is relevant to local readers. These
columns have long functioned as a way for publications to connect with their
community, and for writers to explore local issues with style and personality.
For this reason, local columnists are often longtime, well-known residents
with an insider’s knowledge of the area. For example, at "The Miami Herald,"
Carl Hiaasen has written colorful columns about Florida life, news and politics
since 1985.

SPORTS COLUMN ABOUT EURO 2021 BY: JUNIOR RODRIGUEZ

Brava, Italia! in Euro 2021
The score remained tied 1-1 after ninety minutes of regulation play and
thirty minutes of extra time, and the championship came down to a best-
of-5 in penalty kicks. Italy won, 3-2, capitalizing on England’s missed
opportunities.
It didn’t start that way for the home-standing British. Luke Shaw scored
in the first minute and 57 seconds of play, marking the fastest ever goal
in a European Championship final. But the game was far from over. Italy
fought its way back to tie the match courtesy of Leonardo Bonucci’s goal
at the 67- minute mark.
England’s last celebration dates all the way back to the 1966 World Cup.
Penalty kicks continue to stifle the club’s quest for a major international
title. But it was a redemption story for Italy, winning Euro 2021 after
failing to qualify for the World Cup.
Brava, Italia! For England, it was close, but no cigar.

5 Qualities of a Good Radio Presenters By Exaget
Name: Junior Rodríguez
Radio Presenters are the voice of the station, they create the tone and
style of the station and establish a relationship for listeners. A good
radio presenter knows how to captivate and engage their audience. The
following qualities are what all great radio presenters possess.
1. Leaves their bad mood behind
The most difficult challenge for a lot of radio presenters is controlling
their mood. No matter what is going on outside of work, or if you get an
angry caller, always remain enthusiastic, energetic and positive.
Enthusiasm is catchy and negativity drags everyone down.
2. Knows their audience
It is important that you understand and relate to your audience so that
they can relate to you. As a presenter you need to know and keep
yourself informed about the latest news and trends so that your
audience can connect with you.
3. Uses social media
The world is more connected than ever; your online presence enables
you to talk to your audience so that they can keep up to date with you,
no matter if you are on-air or not. Social media also enables your
audience to interact and engage with you and share their views to other
listeners. Check your social media during your show to give a shout-out
and share some interesting views.
A way to enhance your online presence is via your station’s website.
Here, you could hold competitions and encourage listeners to share
their opinions to increase online engagement.
4. It is authentic
What people love about presenters is their personalities. People who do
not change their personality on air make the best presenters, don’t use
unnatural words/phrases you wouldn’t normally use and never put on
a fake laugh.

5. Addresses listeners as individuals
You should always present as if you are talking to a friend. Radio is an
intimate medium, try to address your audience as “you” as much as you
can rather than “listeners”. Your listeners are usually multi-tasking and
only half-listening – you should never pluralise your audience as this
will break the bond between you and your listener.
Activity for the week: Answer the following questions:
A.Is there another feature that a good radio host needs to be successful?
Write about it.
I think staying Updated
It’s easy for listeners to become disconnected if they don’t feel they can
relate to the voice on the other side of the radio. Countering this ties into
your ability to interact with listeners as a community; sometimes it’s not
enough to focus entirely on your own life. It means understanding and
appealing to your audience’s interests and frustrations. If your audience
is into the latest TV show, watch it, if they're complaining about traffic
in the city centre, find out more about it. The point is to understand and
relate to who you're talking to, even if that means doing things you
wouldn't normally do. Develop a connection that will last.
B. How would you describe your experience on the radio? Do you enjoy
it? Do you dislike it? Why? Describe it widely.
Living the experience of creating radio is without a doubt something
fascinating. From creating the script, modifying the voice, placing the
music, producing audio, etc. until you enter the booth, let your
knowledge flow by creating that bond with the audience and, more than
anything, crowning all this beautiful process with success and local and
national diffusion make it even more spectacular
C.What of the latter concepts (In the fragment) do you consider the most
important and why? In my opinion the most important point for me is to
be authentic. When you show people your true personality and do not
appear, at that moment you create a connection and a bond with the
audience since you do not make the interaction with the listeners
monotonous or what we are always used to hearing, but on the other
side, you do them feel as if you were his friend forever

D.Do you think radio is mainstream, old-fashioned or still a good fighter
in massive media? Sustain your answer. I think it is more old fashioned
because although currently radio is being reproduced, the internet and
social networks and more than anything podcasts, they have managed
to dominate mass communication and have become the most used
means of communication worldwide.

RADIO SCRIPT

Luis: Welcome to today's program, soon we will have the hits of the week
in the field of Indie music, starting as tomorrow The Strokes begins their
tour of various places in United States, after almost two years of absence
from concerts.
Pablo:That's right, Julián from The Strokes assured that the new
concerts will be more striking and with a renewed setlist referring to
The New Abnormal which is his most recent production on the
market.discography
Luis: Hearing that it is also said that they are preparing new music for
next year also fills people with curiosity about what they can do, since
they won their first grammy. With this past production, keeping in mind
that it means that they may want to repeat the logic of the past album by
reaching so many people
Pablo: That's right, they are looking for new sounds
Luis: Well, speaking of new sounds, or maybe new winds, I don't know if
you noticed Javier's departure from Enjambre, it was a tragic blow for
the band, since he achieved everything with the band.
Pablo: So it was, a bit sad, but he left us with Delorean, a new song in
English, it is a great song, lately they are looking to grow in other
markets and with this they are achieving them due to their popularity
which is reaching a number of followers in the United States
Luis: That's it Pablo, they are leaving the name of our state high with
their music and further expanding into other languages, we hope they
do very well.
Pablo: In my point of view, music is always going to do something which
leaves us with
something new, in this case they give us to understand how they long for
something that
has already happened, just like in the movie about going back to the
future.
This is how it is speaks of a person who is trapped in what happened a
long time
before
and longs for it quite fondly
Luis: Pablo we have a special guest today Pablo: Really? who is with us?
Luis: It’s Jvni J
This is how it is already speaking of new Zacatecan music, it is very
important to note that the promising artist Jvni J has just released a new
song, which is called VDT

Pablo: Welcome Jvni, talk about r song
Jvni J: Hi Luis and Pablo. Well, From finding the rhymes, finding that flow
or those vibes that one always looks for to reach the desired sound, to
the melody with which you manage to touch the heart and the art of the
people, it is undoubtedly something wonderful. Although Te Vayas,
which was my first song, I took it out even though I had that fear of what
they would say or questioning myself several times if it was right to take
it out or not and in the end, with everything and fear, I decided to do it
and seeing the reaction of the people who even Today he supports me, I
said to myself: this is my path. What they are Although you go and VDT
are auditory poems for me, since when creating songs, the fact that they
sound different and not monotonous, is to give them that magic touch
they need. In VDT I totally changed my style compared to Although You
Vayas, since I went from a Hip Hop / Rap to an R&B dancehall that
fascinated me. With the help of my producer and my independent label,
I know that in the future we will be able to create more and more
projects and, most importantly, enjoy this musical journey, which is
what moves our souls.
