1. Explain the principle of operation of synchronous motor, describe its equivalent circuit. (10M)
2. Describe Phasor diagrams of cylindrical rotor synchronous motor for different power factors. (10M)
3. Describe the working of synchronous motor and describe why this motor is not self-starting. (10M)

UNIT-IV (INDUCTION MACHINE)


1. Describe the torque slip characteristics of three phase induction motor with neat sketch.
2. Describe with neat sketches the construction of a 3-phase wound induction motor.
3. Why starters are necessary for starting induction motors? Name different starting methods for 3-pahse induction
motor.
4. Describe the working of (i) direct on-line starter (ii) auto-transformer starter
5. The resistance and stand-still reactance per phase of a 3-phase induction motor is 0.1 ohm and
0.4 ohm respectively. If 100 V per phase is induced in the rotor circuit at start then calculate
rotor current and rotor p.f. (i) when rotor is stationary and (ii) when running with a slip of 5%.

7. A 4-pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz induction motor supplies a useful torque of 159 Newton-metre.
Calculate at 4% slip: (i) The rotor input; (ii) Motor input; (iii) Motor efficiency, if the friction
and windage losses total 500 watt and stator losses are 1000 watt.
8. A 440 V, 50 Hz, 4-pole, 3-phase, star-connected induction motor running at 1440 rpm on full
load has a slip ring rotor of resistance 0·01 ohm and standstill reactance of 0·167 ohm, per
phase. Calculate (i) the ratio of standing torque to maximum torque (ii) the ratio of maximum
torque to full load torque.

1. Explain the construction and working principle of split-phase motor.

3. Discuss why single-phase induction motor do not produce starting torque.
