Block 1 Module 3: Natural History of Diseases

REFLECTION PAPER

CONTEXT: These last two weeks, we tackled the natural history of diseases. In this
module, we were able to learn different parasites with its corresponding morphology,
epidemiology, life cycles, the infections it causes, diagnostic tests and its treatment.
During this module, clinical competence (PO#1) and effective communication (PO#2) was
demonstrated. My groupmates and I also engaged in research activities (PO#4) and
utilized system-based approach to healthcare (PO#6). Lastly, I did my research on certain
topics with the references provided for my own personal development (PO#7).

EXPERIENCE: During this third module, the topics about parasitology was familiar to me,
due to my undergraduate course. During our SGD, the cases were able to activate my
prior knowledge that I had from before and share it to the group and the love I have for
learning the life cycles of these worms. However, there were some drugs that I did not
know existed, so that was new to me. Overall, I am finding my adjustment to 2 nd year of
medical school quite good so far. My groupmates and I have been getting along as well
(PO#2). In regards to research, I am glad that our research mentor and coordinator was
very supportive and responsive which hopefully will make this year smooth (PO#4).

REFLECTION: During this module, I realized that there were things that I had not
focused during my undergraduate that were very essential to know in parasitology, such
as, the detailed pathological mechanisms in the body and the host’s physiological
response to it. I also am very new to pharmacology, which made me realize how complex
it is especially the mechanism of action and its corresponding potential interactions and
contraindications. Lastly, I realized that many Filipinos suffers from these parasitic
infections, which made me realize how possible it would be to eradicate and prevent any
infections among our fellow Filipinos (PO#8, 9 ).

ACTION: As future physician, it is essential that we will be able to identify these parasites
and the infections that it cause in the future. These parasites are one of the most
commonly infecting agents in a developing country, like, Philippines. If we knew the
hallmarks and identifications of these parasites, it will be easy for us to target correct
diagnostic tests and then the possible treatment to relieve our patients from pain and
discomfort.

EVALUATION: To sum it all up, the cases from our SGDs helped me activate my prior
knowledge from undergraduate and share it to the group. The topics, especially
pharmacology, was very interesting but challenging. Thankfully, Dr. Songco’s lecture was
excellently helpful for me. These parasites and its corresponding morphology,
epidemiology, life cycles, infections it causes, diagnostic tests and treatment, will surely
be essential in our journey in medicine and in helping eradicating it among our Filipino
people.
