III. Study each of the passages and choose the best answers to the questions that follow.
Passage One
Apple Inc plans to use a larger screen on the next-generation iPhone and has begun to place orders
for the new displays from suppliers in South Korea and Japan, people familiar with the situation
said on Wednesday. The new iPhone screens will measure 4 inches from corner to corner, one
source said. That would represent a roughly 30 percent increase in viewing area, assuming Apple
keeps other dimensions proportional. Apple has used a 3.5-inch screen since introducing the iPhone
in 2007.
3
Early production of the new screens has begun at three suppliers: Korea's LG Display Co Ltd,
Sharp Corp and Japan Display Inc, a Japanese government-brokered merger combining the screen
production of three companies. It is likely all three of the screen suppliers will get production
orders from Apple, which could begin as soon as June. That would allow the new iPhone to go into
production as soon as August, if the company follows its own precedent in moving from orders for
prototypes for key components to launch.
Apple's decision to equip the next iPhone with a larger screen represents part of a competitive
response to Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. Samsung unveiled its top-of-the line Galaxy smartphone
with a 4.8-inch touch-screen and a faster processor earlier this month. With consumers becoming
more and more comfortable using smartphones for tasks they once performed on laptops, like
watching video, other smartphone manufacturers have also moved toward bigger displays.
21. How many different suppliers will most likely be involved in the production of Apple's new
iPhone screens? B
A. Three
B. Two
C. Four
D. One
25. How much bigger will Apple's new screen be, compared to the old one? C
A. 30%
B. 4 inches

Passage Two
Spain's borrowing costs shot up at a bond auction on Thursday, after economic data confirmed the
country is back in recession and reports of an outflow of deposits from nationalized Bankia
hammered its share price.
The Spanish Treasury had to pay around 5 percent to attract buyers of three- and four-year
bonds. The longer-dated paper sold with a yield of 5.106 percent, way above the 3.374 percent the
4
last time it was auctioned. "This ... fits the pattern of recent sales, with the Spanish treasury
successfully getting its supply away but at ever-higher yields," said Richard McGuire, rate strategist
at Rabobank in London. "This unfavorable trend looks set to remain firmly in place ... Ultimately,
this ratcheting up of yields will likely require some form of outside intervention," McGuire said.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Wednesday his government, struggling to
reduce its budget deficit, could soon find it difficult to fund itself affordably on the bond market
unless the pressure eases. His finance minister, Cristobal Montoro, meets heads of finance of all 17
regions later to review their budget plans which are a crucial plank of the drive to lower public debt.
The European Commission warned last week that stubbornly high debts in the regions and
the welfare system would prevent Spain meeting its deficit goal of 5.3 percent of GDP this year.
Spain's 10-year yields have spiked back above 6 percent, which investors view as a pivot point that
could accelerate a climb to 7 percent, a cost of borrowing widely seen as unsustainable even though
Madrid has sold well over half its debt needs for the year.
26. How much higher was this past bond yield compared to the previous one? A
A. over 1.5% higher
B. 0.5 % higher
C. It wasn't higher. It was lower.
D. 0.5% lower
28. According to the article, how high can Spain's 10 year yields go? A
A. 7%
B. 6%
C. 5%
D. 2%
30. According to the article, what's the biggest hurdle to Spain meeting its deficit goal this year?
A
A. Debts in the regions and the welfare system
B. The drop in value of Bankia shares
C. The inability of the government to successfully sell bonds
D. The ability of the government to successfully sell bonds
Passage 3
Until recently, most American entrepreneurs were men. Discrimination against women in
business, the demands of caring for families, and lack of business training had kept the number of
women entrepreneurs Line small. Now, however, businesses owned by women account for more
5
than $40 billion in annual revenues, and this figure is likely to continue rising throughout the 1990s.
As Carolyn Doppelt Gray, an official of the Small Business Administration, has noted, “The 1970s
was the decade of women entering management, and the 1980s turned out to be the decade of the
woman entrepreneur”.
What are some of the factors behind this trend? For one thing, as more women earn advanced
degrees in business and enter the corporate world, they are finding obstacles. Women are still
excluded from most executive suites. Charlotte Taylor, a management consultant, had noted, “In the
1970s women believed if they got an MBA and worked hard they could become chairman of the
board. Now they’ve found out that isn’t going to happen, so they go out on their own”.
In the past, most women entrepreneurs worked in “women’s” fields: cosmetics and clothing,
for example. But this is changing. Consider ASK Computer Systems, a $22-million-a-year computer
software business. It was founded in 1973 by Sandra Kurtzig, who was then a housewife with
degrees in math and engineering. When Kurtzig founded the business, her first product was software
that let weekly newspapers keep tabs on their newspaper carriers and her office was a bedroom at
home, with a shoebox under the bed to hold the company’s cash. After she succeeded with the
newspaper software system, she hired several bright computer-science graduates to develop
additional programs. When these were marketed and sold, ASK began to grow. It now has 200
employees, and Sandra Kurtzig owns $66.9 million of stock.
Of course, many women who start their own businesses fail, just as men often do. They still
face hurdles in the business world, especially problems in raising money; the banking and finance
world is still dominated by men, and old attitudes die hard. Most businesses owned by women are
still quite small. But the situation is changing; there are likely to be many more Sandra Kurtzigs in
the years ahead.
