LEGIONES CATAEGIS ARMY LIST

The Thunder Warriors, also referred to in ancient records as the Thunder Legion and the Thunder Regiments, and known in High Gothic as the
Legiones Cataegis, were the 20 legions of genetically-engineered, superhuman warriors of Terra created by the design of the Emperor of Mankind
through alchemical augmentation, somatic gene-sculpting and muscle-grafting techniques. Their purpose was to unite the homeworld of humanity
beneath the Emperor's rule during the Unification Wars on Terra in the late 29th and 30th Millenniums. The legions were commanded by
Cataegis warriors of particular skill, intellect and mental stability, who held the rank of Primarch. Wrought to be living weapons, the Cataegis were
known to be physically stronger, more savage, more resilient and more potent in combat than the later Astartes, though they were not as long-lived
and suffered from often dangerous mental instability and early metabolic collapse when their bodies began to reject their augmentations.
Imperial chronicles hold that the last of the legendary Thunder Warriors died heroically during the final battle of the Unification Wars. The truth
of the matter was far different, for the Thunder Warriors' fate was bound up in the terrible price that the Emperor proved willing to pay to secure a
better future for Mankind.
The following army list is intended to provide players with a template to enable to field a force representing the Legiones Cataegis in the early
stages of the Wars of Unification on Terra. At this time the Thunder Legions were a basic but effective force, super human shock infantry with a
small amount of integral Auxilia support attachments. The list is limited and straight forward, reflecting the limited variance at this early stage of
the Wars, latter supplements will expand upon options and additional units that become available during Campaign play.

CATAEGIS SPECIAL RULES


Thunder Warriors were large, greater in size than their later cousin Astartes and equal to most Custodes. They were made highly resistant to psychic
attack, perhaps because of the sorcery they would regularly face during the Age of Strife, and had tremendous upper body strength that was
considered to be unparalleled. However the Thunder Warriors genetic template was unstable and they were prone to fits of bloodlust and instability.
Short-lived and rife with both mental and physical health issues, Thunder Warriors were known to suddenly drop dead or stop following orders.
However, they lived as warlords and relished battle, their human emotions were not expunged from them, and they were known for their dry humor.

Bloodlust
During combat any Cataegis unit which is given the option of performing a Sweeping Advance or Consolidation must make a Bloodlust test
(Leadership -2), if they fail mark the unit with a Bloodlust token. While a unit has a Bloodlust token they must perform Sweeping Advances and
Consolidate towards the closest enemy unit which they can damage, in addition to having to Move towards and Charge the closest enemy unit they
can damage. The player cannot intentionally Shoot at another unit in order to prevent themselves from Assaulting the original target. At the start of
each Turn, the player may make another Bloodlust test at the same time as Regrouping test, if this is passed the Bloodlust token may be removed.

Frenzy
Whenever a unit with this special rule is part of a combat that either destroyed the enemy outright or via sweeping advance they get a Frenzy token.
For every Frenzy token they add +1 attack on a turn they charge, but an additional -1 Leadership for Bloodlust tests. In addition rather than moving
towards and assaulting the closest ENEMY unit, a Frenzied Bloodlust unit must make a Leadership check (with the same penalties as a Bloodlust
test) if there are any FRIENDLY units which are closer, if any of those checks are failed, the Frenzied unit will target them instead. If the unit ever
fails a Morale check (other than a Bloodlust test) or recovers from Bloodlust, all Frenzy tokens are removed.

Genetic Manipulation
All models count as having Rad Filters. Plus: WIP, this rule will primarily affect the campaign focus of the army, more than likely having some
effects which couple with the Crusade Campaign rules as well.

Psychic Resilience
If a unit with this special rule is targeted by a Psychic power of any kind they must roll a Leadership test with a negative modifier equal to the Warp
Level of the power cast. If passed, the power is negated and does not have any effect on the Cataegis unit (although it may still affect non-Cataegis
units), if failed the power works as normal. Note that this is instead of any normal Deny the Witch roll.

The Sodality
A unit composed entirely of models with this special rule has a unit coherency of 3" instead of the usual 2", and may always attempt to Regroup as
an unmodified Leadership test regardless of casualties taken or any other effects.

LEGIONS AND TRAITS
Upon inception each of the different Cataegis Legions were rallied from a single format. They were never designed to be anything other than a
Heavy Infantry force to subdue the warlords and petty tyrants of Terra. But as the years wore on, depending on who they fought, where the bulk of
the men were recruited from, or even the whims of their currently serving Primarch, they each started to develop particular expertise in combat.
While again the wants and orders of a current Primarch could affect these in some way, as the wars of unity continued on, the Legions found
themselves deployed more often than not into engagements that at the very least leaned toward the legions combat preferences.

(Designers Note: Below we have listed traits we think would suit the Legion they are numbered for. While it certainly is a bit kitschy, we are simply going off what the Valdor
book gave us. If you think that the VIth Legiones Cataegis would instead be better off having the ‘Fanatical Unitist’ Trait instead of ‘Indefatigable Trackers’, feel free to instead
use that and make sure you send us pictures of your Cataegis forces! Like the Legions of the Astartes, the 2nd and 11th Legions have been left out intentionally to allow players
to create their own version of these regiments.)

The Primarchs and their command echelons became testing grounds for new and improved equipment or almost museum-like
displays of captured relics and weapons. There was a particular case of a horrific weapon known simply as The Sepulchre cutting
swathes through the Cataegis of the VIIth, only for it to be seen weeks later annihilating the enemies of the VIIth’s Primarch. While
early Primarchs were selected by the Legions Custodian advisor, as the wars for Unification went on a Legion’s Primarch could attain
the rank through bloody, lethal Command Tournaments or even by a quorum vote of the entire Legion’s warriors. No matter how
the Primarch attained their rank, their rule of the Legion was total. Given this, they would regularly receive the bulk of war spoils and
the newest equipment that the Emperor's own manufacturia could supply even months or years before their own frontline units would
see the benefits. The rank of Primarch, especially during the early days of the Thunder Legions, could be a fleeting privilege as the
bearer was killed in battle, lost an honour duel to a usurper or who’s body turned on him. There was one well recorded incident when
the title of Primarch of the XVIIth was held by 7 different Cataegis over the course of a single day due to the horrific losses the
Legion sustained holding the Battlements of the Gaulic city of Burlen. It was only toward the end of the wars for Unification that the
Primarchs of the Cataegis became household names, when the loss of one of these mighty commanders would be mourned across
the city-states and continents of the Emperor’s fledgling Imperium.

TESSERAIUS COHORT CHAMPION
A Tessearius holds no true command authority, he is simply a sublime warrior even amongst is his gene-enhanced peers. Many of the Legions hold
‘first blood’ tournaments to elect their formations Tesseraius. The Tesseraius’s main role on the battlefield is to act as Life-Ward to the formations
Legate, but when his charge isn’t deployed to the field, many Tesseraiia will be seen at the spear tip of the formations charge, or where the fighting is

An Aenaetor acts simply as the Headquarters Cadre’s comms specialist. Just as the nucio-operators and radiomen in the armies of man before him,
the Aenaetor is instrumental in the Legate’s or even the Primarchs orders reaching frontline units. Calling in artillery or airborne support or even
something as simple and mundane as relaying troop movements and progress reports through lengthy campaigns.

SIGNIFIER BANNER BEARER


The Signifier is quite possibly the most lauded rank to be held below Legate within any of the Legiones Cataegis. They hold the honour and
responsibility of carrying their Legiones colours into battle. The standard could be anything from a single Legates heraldry, all the way through to
the full legions standard, fighitng side by side with their Primarch. The most legendary Signifier was Arik Taranis who carried the Emperor’s
Lightning Standard into battle side by side with his lord until he was reportedly cut down during the Battle of Mount Ararat.
