DAY FIVE

BIODIVERSIRTY
It is the variety of species of living things in an ecosystem. It is simply the
different types of animals and the different types of plants in the ecosystem. The
largest biodiversity is found in the equatorial region whilst the smallest
biodiversity is found in the deserts.
QUESTIONS
1 Name the different types of animals in your area?
2 Name the different types of plants in your area?
3 Why do the equatorial region have the largest biodiversity?
BIOMES
The biome is the largest ecosystem. Their habitats are equivalent to climatic
regions. Climatic regions are named after the dominant type of vegetation such as
savanna means grasslands with scattered trees, deserts means little or no
vegetation. Examples of biomes are - equatorial rainforests
- savanna
- deserts
A biome has inputs and outputs. The inputs are the nonliving physical conditions
of the area mainly the rainfall and the temperature. Plants and animals grow
according to the

temperature and rainfall of the areas which is referred to as adaptation. Below are
the climatic regions of Africa

Draw the map in you notebook

Deserts inputs
Temperatures are high throughout the whole year averaging 30 degrees celcious
There is little or no rainfall received

Savanna inputs
Temperature averages 21 degrees celcious with distinct summer and winter
seasons
Rainfall averages 800 mm and there are distinct rainy and dry seasons

Equatorial rainforests inputs

Temperature is high throughout the whole year averaging 26 degrees celcious
Rain fall is high throughout the whole year averaging 2000mm
