Site 1: Field Post 1

1. SITE LOCATION
The UNHCR Field Post 1 is located in Kakuma 1 at Kakuma, Turkana, Kenya at location coordinates
3°43'44.22"N, 34°50'34.78"E. Figure 1 provides the satellite view of the facility as obtained from
Google Maps.

2. LOAD DEMAND ANALYSIS

Table 1 provides a summary of the total loads identified during the load demand assessment. The
total facility load is approximately 11.02 kW.

3. MOUNTING SPACE & STRUCTURE ASSESSMENT

Existing roof space is enough to accommodate proposed system size. limited chances of shading by
surrounding trees. The tilt angle is well and will allow self-cleaning. Subject to structure audit.

4. LOAD DEMAND FORECASTING

The approximate daily energy demand is 122 kWh. This translates to 44,530 kWh. This makes PV
Solar viable. The expected growth in demand is factored in.

5. ASSUMPTIONS
The following assumptions were taken into account in the design:

• All washrooms to have lights installed

• LED energy efficient lights to be installed
• The generator has not experienced any overload
• High-mast lighting fixture will be introduced.

6. SOLAR PV SYSTEM SIZE, BATTERY BANK, CHARGE CONTROLLER AND INVERTER.

A 40 KWp solar PV system is considered for this facility will be able to fully charge the proposed
battery bank from a State of Charge (SoC) of 0%. The battery bank usable capacity is 120 KWh, Li-ion
batteries, with 100% DoD. The battery bank would be fully charged by the renewable energy system
in 1 day from State of Charge 0%.

The objective of the solar power system is to always meet 100% of the facility demand while the
available diesel generator is considered for back-up and emergency purposes only.

The system must be optimized so that solar PV power and diesel generators always work
simultaneously when the solar PV plant is either partially or fully unavailable for environmental or
technical reasons. The contractor is responsible for locating the PV generator injection points
according to the project's targets and providing all the distribution network upgrade requirements at
the generation side. The solar power system must be integrated with the diesel generator through an
Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) to automatically transfer the power supply between the primary
power source (solar PV generator and storage system) to the generators within three seconds. The
power sources priority should be Solar, Storage, then Diesel Generators.

Moreover, the system should allow more than one power source to feed the load simultaneously. In
the case of future demand growth that the solar PV system can't accommodate fully, the generator
must be automatically engaged to meet a certain percentage of the load that the solar PV plant can't
meet (e.g., 30%, 50%. etc.) until the demand can be fully covered by the solar PV system again.

The contractor must appropriately size and optimize the inverter(s) and charge controller(s) to meet
the system specification and facility power requirements.

Appendices 1 includes the electrical inventory except for the future high mast lighting fixture and
future appliances.
