Part A
1. a) What will happen if no commutator is used in d.c. generator? Explain. 2.5
b) Find the no. of dummy coils for a 2-layer simplex wave winding for a 4-pole d.c. 2.5
generator havingslots equal to last two digit of your reg. no., each containing 4 sides.
c) What are the conditions for voltage build-up of a shunt generator? 2.5
2. a) How counter EMF helps d.c. motor? Explain 2.5
b) A synchronous motor absorbingkW powerequal to last two digit of your reg. no., is 3
connected in parallel with a factory load of 240 kW having a p.f. of 0.8. If the combined
load has a p.f. of 0.9, what is the value of leading kVAR supplied by the motor and at what
p.f. is it working?
c) What will happen if the shunt field winding of a loaded shunt motor accidentally breaks? 2

Part – B

3. a) How can you control the speed of a DC motor by varying the resistance in the armature 2.5
circuit?
b) A 2300 V, 3-phase, star-connected synchronous motor has a resistance of 0.2 Ω per phase 3.5
and a synchronous reactance equal to last digit of your reg. no + 1 per phase. The motor is
operating at 0.5 pf leading with a line current of 200 A. Determine the value of the
generated emf per phase.
c) Draw the phasor diagram of synchronous motor with different excitations 1.5
4. a) How does changing excitation current affect a synchronous motor? 3
b) A 3-phase star-connected alternator is rated at 1600 kVA, 13500 V. The armature effective 3
resistance and synchronous reactance are 1.5 Ω and last two digit of your reg. no.
respectively per phase. Calculate the percentage regulation for a load of 1280 kW at power

(ii) 0.8 leading
(iii) 0.8 lagging
c) Can a d.c. generator be converted into an alternator? Explain. 1.5
