SCHOOL YEAR 2020 CLASSES: YEAR TWO SME A, B, C

INTEGRATED SCIENCE TEST NO 1 / 100marks
DATE: 12/10/2021 Duration: Three hours
INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Don’t mix the section.

2. Attempt all questions and show clearly all possible steps (where applicable).
3. Answer each section on its own answer sheets.

SECTION A (PHYSICS)_/40marks)

Q 1. The astronomical unit (symbol: au, or au or AU) is a unit of length, roughly the
distance from Earth to the Sun and equal to about 150 million kilometres.
(i) Is the Earth inner or outer planet? Give any two examples of heavenly bodies
rather than planets. /1.5marks
(ii) What is a unit? /2marks
(iii)Which are fundamental or basic units? /2marks
(iv) What are derived units? /2marks
(v) Name the SI unit of current / temperature / amount of a substance / luminous
intensity. /2marks
(vi) Check the correctness of following equation by dimensional analysis ie show that
left handed side dimension matches to right handed side dimension. /2.5marks
1
𝑥 = 𝑥𝑜 + 𝑣𝑜 𝑡 + 𝑎𝑡 2
2
(i) The Earth is one of 4 inner planets aka terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.)
Heavenly bodies or natural celestial objects rather than planets examples include a star,
natural satellite, asteroid, comet, the Moon or the Sun (Attention: Objects flying or
moving in the atmosphere are not usually considered as heavenly bodies).

(ii) A unit is any standard used for making comparisons in measurements. It can be defined
as a definite magnitude of a quantity, defined and adopted by convention or by law, that is
used as a standard for measurement of the same kind of quantity.
(iii)The seven SI base units are meter, second, ampere, mole, kelvin, candela and kilogram.
(iv) The derived units are units that result from a mathematical combination of SI base units.
(v) Ampere/kelvin/mole/candela
(vi) Refer to the following to answer the similar question:

Q 2. An optical instrument or optic is a device that processes light waves (or photons),
either to enhance an image for viewing or to analyze and determine their characteristic
properties
(i) What meant by a wave? /2marks
(ii) Is a light a wave? Explain. /2marks
(iii) Show that final image is at 30 cm to the right of the third lens in the following lens
combination: /4marks

(i) Wave is a periodic disturbance of the particles of a substance which may be propagated
without net movement of the particles, such as heat, or sound.
(ii) Yes, light is a wave. Light shows all properties of wave (reflection, refraction, diffraction
and interference)
(iii) Let work step by step:

1 1 1 1 1 1 𝑢 −𝑓 30−10
 = 𝑢 + 𝑣 → 𝑣 = 𝑓 − 𝑢 → (𝑣1 )−1 = 𝑢1 ×𝑓1 = →
𝑓1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 300
𝑣1 = 15𝑐𝑚
 Therefore, image formed by convex lens (L1) is at point I1
and acts as virtual object for concave lens (L2).
1 1 1 1 1 1 1
 = 𝑢 + 𝑣 → −10 = −10 + 𝑣 → 𝑣 = 0 → 𝑣2 = ∞𝑐𝑚
𝑓2 2 2 2 2
(note that the object is not real)
1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1
 = 𝑢 + 𝑣 → 30 = −∞ + 𝑣 → 𝑣 = 30 → 𝑣3 = 30 𝑐𝑚
𝑓3 3 3 3 3

Q 3. Moment is a turning effect produced by a force acting at a distance on an object

and it is expressed as the product of the force and the distance from its line of action to a
given point.
(i) Distinguish moment from momentum. /2marks
(ii) State the principle of moment. /2marks
(iii)Length of a rod is 50 cm. Three forces act on the rod, as shown in figure below. If
the axis of rotation is point C, what is the net of the moment of force. /6marks

(i) 1. Momentum applies to objects in motion and is the product of mass and
velocity. It is not the energy, but the variables are the same. Where momentum is
m*v, kinetic energy is (m*v^2)/2. The momentum is always conserved.

2. By contrast, moment is an expression of the "rotational force" caused by a
force acting at some distance from a fulcrum. Moment is also called "torque",
and is a static term rather than an expression of any kind of energy. Ex: Just as
pushing on a stationary object does not consume energy, attempting to turn a
stationary object gives the same result.

(ii) The Principle of Moments states that when a body is balanced, the total clockwise
moment about a point equals the total anticlockwise moment about the same
point.
(iii) Let work on it step by step

Q 4. Projectile motion is the motion of an object thrown or projected into the air, subject
to only the acceleration of gravity.

A golfer hits a ball from horizontal ground, giving it an initial velocity of 40 m/s at an angle
of 270 to the horizontal.
(i) Where will the ball be 2.5 seconds after it is hit? /3marks
(ii) What will be the greatest height reached by the ball? /3marks
(iii) Where will the ball land? /4marks

End!!!!
