4Moses said, "So said the Lord, At the dividing point of the night, I will go out
into the midst of Egypt,
5and every firstborn in the land of Egypt will die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh
who sits on his throne to the firstborn of the slave woman who is behind the
millstones, and every firstborn animal.
6And there will be a great cry throughout the entire land of Egypt, such as
there never has been and such as there shall never be again.
7But to all the children of Israel, not one dog will whet its tongue against either
man or beast, in order that you shall know that the Lord will separate between
the Egyptians and between Israel.

19You shall not bring a prostitute's fee or the price of a dog, to the House of
the Lord, your God, for any vow, because both of them are an abomination to
the Lord, your God.
ר' יוסף בכור שור דברים פרשת כי תצא פרק כג פסוק יט
שאם לקחה טלה באתננה ורוצה לעשות ממנו קרבן לא:(יט) לא תביא אתנן זונה

Prostitute's fee: If she took a lamb as her fee and desires to make from it an
offering, you shall not accept it, for it was brought through licentiousness, and it
is abhorrent before the Lord.

Price of a dog: If he were to exchange a dog for a sheep, the sheep shall not
come before Me, for it appears as if he is making a vow of a dog.
רמב"ן דברים פרשת כי תצא פרק כג פסוק יט

Ramban
Prostitutes would use their fees for mitzvot, thinking to atone for their sins..
Similarly, with regards to the price of a dog, for those who hunt with dogs and
those who guard the city walls raise brazen dogs that damage the public and
make vows with the revenue of their sale as an atonement for their souls.
כלי יקר דברים פרשת כי תצא פרק כג פסוק יט

והזונה מצחה נחושה והרי שניהם שוים,כן לא ידעו שבעה כי אבר קטן משביעו רעב

Price of a dog: for dogs, as well, are brazenly licentious in public, they are never
satiated, for that small organ, when attempted to be satiated is still hungry. The
prostitute is brazen. Both are equal in licentious and brazenous and are
therefore it is inappropriate to bring them to the place of holiness.

Price of a dog- A licentious male. Similarly in the Book of Revelation, “Outside
are the dogs and the sorcerers and the sexually immoral, and the murderers…”
The proof is from the expression, “abomination to the Lord,” for a dog is
among His creatures and it is impossible to characterize its behavior or its price
as an abomination.

Here κύνες are not merely impure pagans, but the impudently impure, possibly
in the special and darker sense of “sodomites” (cf. 1 Timothy 1:10;
Deuteronomy 23:19-20, collated with πόρνη and βδέλυγμα). cf. on Revelation
21:8 and Cooke’s North Sem. Inscriptions, p. 68. Such loathsome practices were
not uncommon in the Oriental cults.
Deut. 23:19- New International Version
You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute
into the house of the LORD your God to pay any vow, because the LORD your
God detests them both.

he fell on his face, and he prostrated himself. And David said: 'Mephibosheth!'
And he answered: 'Behold your servant.'

7And David said to him: "Do not fear for I will surely show you kindness for the
sake of Jonathan your father, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your

Rabbi Yehuda says: During the generation that the son of David comes, the hall of
the assembly of the Sages will be designated for prostitution, and the Galilee will be
destroyed, and the Gavlan, i.e., Bashan, will be desolate, and the residents of the
border who flee the neighboring gentiles will circulate from city to city and will
receive no sympathy. The wisdom of scholars will diminish, and sin-fearing people
will be despised. And the face of the generation will be like the face of a dog. And the

truth will be lacking, as it is stated: “And the truth is lacking [ne’ederet], and he
who departs from evil is negated” (Isaiah 59:15).

Not all animals are alike. There are some who have more intelligence than
others, for there are among them that possess a soul and consequently,
intelligence. And there are among them those that are devoid of intelligence
altogether. This is the meaning of the Talmudic assertion that a dog recognizes
its owner, for as explained in the Tractate Bava Kama (60b), dogs possess a soul,
and therefore possess consciousness. For this reason, they are called “kelev,”
“kulo lev”- all heart. The cat, on the other hand is the opposite. It does not
recognize its owner, that is, its master.
This is not due to the stupidity of the cat, but rather to its lack of a soul. This is
the opposite of the dog to whom Isaiah (56) refers to as being of “brazen souls”
(azei nefesh). This term indicates that they possess a nefesh (soul) and the term
azei indicates “exaggeration” of soul. It is due to this quality that dogs know
their owners…
