Introduction

It is necessary to know the effects of some alcohols on humans and to

know how to avoid their harmful effects. Concentrated hydrogen
peroxide solution is a dangerous and corrosive alcohol. It can cause eye
and skin damage. It slowly decomposes, forming oxygen gas. It should be
stored in a dark place to avoid fires. Dilute hydrogen peroxide solution is
irritant to the eyes and the skin. It should be stored in a dark place. The
process of degradation to oxygen is accelerated by some special enzymes.
Very dilute hydrogen peroxide solution is used for bleaching hair and it is
stored in dark.
How to deal with alcohols

i. The dangers of alcohols

As well as alcohols are good for humanity, it's also very dangerous for
them, as it cause serious damage to:

1. The eyes: alcohols cause serious irritation; also it may cause

drowsiness or dizziness.
2. Skin or hair: they cause burns and skin abnormalities
3. Fires: alcohols may cause fires

ii. Instructions when using alcohols:

Most of alcohols are dangerous as we know, so we must follow the
workplace's instructions to avoid accidents and harmful injuries. The
instructions briefly are:

 Alcohol shouldn't touch the eyes.

 Alcohol shouldn't come closer to the fire.
 Alcohol should be kept in chemical storeroom.
 Make sure that all sources of flames are removed or covered from
the laboratory if hydrogen peroxide or any other alcohol will be
used.
 In condition that alcohol is swallowed, call emergency medical
personnel immediately.
 Always store alcohol in plastic bottles or in PVC-coated glass
bottles.
 Store hydrogen peroxide in smaller-sized bottles whenever possible
to keep it fresh and to make storage and handling easier.
 Always wear chemical splash goggles, chemical-resistance gloves,
and chemical-resistance apron whenever using hydrogen peroxide.
 Hydrogen peroxide should only be used in a lab that is well-
ventilated.
 Alcohol shouldn't be mixed with strong oxidizing agents.
 Always close the bottles that contain hydrogen peroxide after using
them.
 If hydrogen peroxide or any other alcohol touched the eyes, use
eyewash to clean the eyes with water for at least 15 minutes.
 A dry chemical fire extinguisher should be presented always in
case of using hydrogen peroxide or any methyl alcohol.
 Eyewashes supplies must be available in any laboratory.
 If hydrogen peroxide splashes onto your skin and clothing, splash
water onto the affected area then change your clothes as fast as you
can.
 Don’t keep alcohol in hot area as this may causes fires.
 Always remove the alcohol container from the demonstration area
before igniting the salt mixture.
 Never add more alcohol to the demonstration once it started.
 You should wash your hand after touching alcohol or any chemical
element.
 Never use a test tube was used for alcoholic experiments without
washing it well.

iii. Hazard statements when using hydrogen peroxide and

what should and shouldn't be done:

 Drinking some of hydrogen peroxide accidently.

proceedings: if it was a small quantity, it wouldn't be very harmful; it

causes stomach upset and vomiting sometimes, but in the case of drinking
a lot quantity; it will cause a big stomach irritation, burns which requires
rapid medical intervention, and in worst case death.
 While making bleaches using hydrogen peroxide, a few drops
of it was felt on the person's skin.

Proceedings: in case of contact with hydrogen peroxide on the skin, an

eye washes or spray for immediate washing should be used immediately
for emergencies, washing the area that was exposed to hydrogen peroxide
with abundant quantities of water for 15 minutes at least, contaminated
clothing and shoes with hydrogen peroxide must be removed under the
shower, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water, seek medical
assistance if irritation, pain, or condition persists toxic symptoms.

 While doing an experiment in school using concentrated

hydrogen peroxide, gases that come from the alcohol has
touched the person's eyes.

Proceedings: immediately wash eyes with abundant amounts of water for

at least 15 minutes, eyelids must be opened while washing the eyes, to
ensure that water reaches all tissues of the eyes and eyelids that can be
reached, ask for medical advice\help.

 While performing a scientific experiment on a laboratory at

school; one of the students has poured some of hydrogen
peroxide into the ground.

Proceeding: first; stop or reduce the rate of alcohol leakage at the point of
leakage then keep all ignition sources safe from leak point and collect
hydrogen peroxide, don't walk through the spilled product and avoid skin
contact and inhalation.

 In one of the laboratories, it goes on fire accidently because of

a small defect.

Proceedings: immediately use fire extinguisher – which is available at

each laboratory – to stop the fire, make sure that the fire is stopped.
Conclusion

At the end: we had figured out that how to deal with alcohols and had
known how to avoid their harmful effects. We learned how to behave
while using alcohols and the important instructions which we must stick
to it to stay safe such as alcohols shouldn’t touch the eyes or the skin,
they shouldn’t come closer to the fire and they shouldn’t kept in hot area.
We learned a lot about alcohols and how to behave if things go wrong
while using them in laboratories or factories. Thus we now have a lot of
information about alcohols and we wish this research could help anyone
needs information about alcohols.
