Izzy: Let’s talk about the Treaty of Paris that came into effect on April 11, 1899.
This agreement was signed by John Hay, the US Secretary of State, after the
Spanish American War. Napakaloob naman sa agreement na’to that Spain
surrendered to the remaining colonies of the Spanish Empire: Cuba, Puerto Rico,
Guam, and the Philippines to the US. Of course, nagbayad ang mga Amerikano ng
20 million dollars sa Spain.
Carla: Noong mga panahon yun, the American soldiers were in charge
of education. But it all changed in 1991 when around 600 teachers arrived sa
USS Thomans para palitan ang mga kasundalohan. These teachers were also
called as the Thomasites.
Carla: *hay naku* alam mo ba na ang public education was made free for all
at that time? At yung mode of instruction na ginagamit nila is English sosyal
syempre.
izzy: huwag rin kakalimutan na that this created a new educated middle class in
the Philippines. And that the Filipinos learned American models of thought,
culture, and ways of life.
neil: punta naman tayo sa language, since the Filipinos were colonized for more
than 300 years prior to the American colonial period, also here’s a not so fun fact
by the way: spain colonized us 333 years. Back to what I was saying, the
Spanish language was widely used even during the American regime. This led to a
great portion of literature being written in the Spanish language even by the
Filipinos.
jessie: To list off some examples, of newspapers during this time. We have the
following. *Read ppt* But of course, school publications also emerged during
this period such as: *read ppt*
carla: So boring naman your part. Tabi ako na. Sa mga panahong here, comics
began to appear. Oh, diba bongga it rhymes? I’m so intelligent talaga.
Anyways, *read ppt* Of course, may mga famous playwrights din during that
time like the following: *read ppt*
jessie: For your information, ang playwright po ay person who writes plays.
neil: Apprentices, sabi nga ni jessie yummy boi, it can be described as someone
who learns a skill by working for an expert in that field for a fixed period of
time. Alongside, *read ppt* For anthology—
izzy: For anthology, the essays *read ppt*
carla: sa kabila ng lahat ng ito, evolution came about. As time passed by during
the American colonial period, Filipino writers in English progressed from being
American writers' apprentices to becoming authors of their own works with their
own voice and style. This advancement in the use of the English language
provided the impetus for younger Filipino writers to confidently compose their
own stories and contribute to the country's increasing list of literary works.
neil: So, what have you learned today jessie my boi?
klaseng uri ng pakikipag communicate mapa-written man o verbal.
