Course Description - As a people, we are charged with the responsibility to ensure that new,
modern, and sustainable practices are adopted to improve our food production systems.
Hydroponics is a form of crop farming that promotes the growth of a healthier crop in an intensive
system. Most importantly these methods can be adopted by home growers and small business start-
ups. This course will provide the necessary teaching content to ensure all participants gain the
basic knowledge of the science of Hydroponic farming, confidence to construct any hydroponic
system and improve their diet.

Learning Outcomes

1. To understand the principles of plant health.


2. To understand plant fertility and fertilizer blends.
3. To have a general understanding of the different types of hydroponic systems.
4. To apply the teaching content in constructing any hydroponic system.
5. To understand Post-harvest Technology for fresh produce.

Session 1 – Introduction
1. Definitions and terminologies.
2. Main requirements for a hydroponic system.
3. Basic home systems.

Session 2 - Types of Hydroponic Systems


1. Identifying different types of Hydroponic Systems.
2. Utilization of Hydroponic systems based on farming specifications.
3. Basic Hydroponics home/small scale system (materials & cost).

Session 3 – Plant Nutrients, Fertilizer Formulation & Blending, Water Quality Testing
1. Plant Fertility and Hydroponic Chemistry.
2. Water Quality Testing.
3. Chemical formulation of plant nutrients.

Session 4 – Food Safety


1. Introduction to Food Safety.
2. Introduction to Post-Harvest Technology.

Session 5 – Sustainable Hydroponic Business Plan


1) Capital investments.
2) Recordkeeping and record-keeping systems.
3) Small scale business model for a hydroponic start-up.
