A. DESCRIPTION: This learning kit is an innovative tool produced by SPDCSS to meet the standards
of the K to 12 Curriculum in providing our teachers and learners relevant materials that encourages
independent and self-regulated learning among learners.
GRADE LEVEL STANDARD:
The learner demonstrates communicative competence through his/ her understanding of Philippine Literature
and other texts types for a deeper appreciation of Philippine Culture.

CONTENT STANDARD:
The learner demonstrates understanding of: pre-colonial Philippine literature as a means of connecting to the
past; various reading styles; ways of determining word meaning; the sounds of English and the prosodic
features of speech; and correct subject-verb agreement.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learner transfers learning by: showing appreciation for the literature of the past; comprehending texts
using appropriate reading styles; participating in conversations using appropriate context-dependent
expressions; producing English sounds correctly and using the prosodic features of speech effectively in
various situations; and observing correct subject-verb agreement.

C. LEARNING MATERIAL/MODULE:

“The Creation”, “Malakas and Maganda”

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a
tree without roots.”

There is a famous Filipino proverb (salawikain or sawikain) which goes, “Ang taong hindi
marunong tumingin sa pinanggalingan, hindi makakarating sa paroroonan.” This proverb highlights how
important it is for an individual to acknowledge and understand his/her roots or origins.

Listen to the song, “Tayo’y mga Pinoy”, composed by Heber Bartolome, which was first performed by his
group, Bayuhay, in 1978 during the first Metro Manila Popular Music Festival. Examine the lyrics of the
song, and then answer Activity 1 in Activity Sheet on page 4.

A folktale is a traditional narrative, a story, or legend that is passed down orally form one generation to the
next and becomes a part community’s tradition. On the other hand, a myth is a traditional sacred story,
which usually narrates the activities of gods and heroes, and that can explain a natural phenomenon or
cultural pratice.

Read the following myths in the book and answer Activity 2 and Activity 3 in Activity Sheet on
page 5.

Literery Elements: Plot, Setting and Narrative


Plot – the series of events that unfold iin the story. This means that it is made up of the main things that
happen in the sotry from beginning, middle, to end. In folktales and fables, the plot is usually simple.
Setting – the location where the story takes place. A story may have a change or setting in different scenes.
Characters – the persons, figures, or animals involved in th story.
