“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a
tree without roots.”
There is a famous Filipino proverb (salawikain or sawikain) which goes, “Ang taong hindi
marunong tumingin sa pinanggalingan, hindi makakarating sa paroroonan.” This proverb highlights how
important it is for an individual to acknowledge and understand his/her roots or origins.
Listen to the song, “Tayo’y mga Pinoy”, composed by Heber Bartolome, which was first performed by his
group, Bayuhay, in 1978 during the first Metro Manila Popular Music Festival. Examine the lyrics of the
song, and then answer Activity 1 in Activity Sheet on page 4.
A folktale is a traditional narrative, a story, or legend that is passed down orally form one generation to the
next and becomes a part community’s tradition. On the other hand, a myth is a traditional sacred story,
which usually narrates the activities of gods and heroes, and that can explain a natural phenomenon or
cultural pratice.
