Devise of The Succession Notes
Devise of The Succession Notes
20
Devise for the Succession was the plan made by Edward and Northumberland.
When Edward died, Lady Jane Grey would take over the throne, not Mary, the true heir.
Edward and Northumberland were both protestant and did not want the Catholic Mary on
the throne.
Mary was angry at this and raised an army to attack London. This shows she was a strong
leader even though she was a woman.
Many protestants also supported Mary.
Lady Jane Grey was weak, and Mary had gathered masses of support.
The people respected that the Tudors were the family of English royalty and therefore Mary
should be queen not Lady Jane Grey.
