GROUNATION DAY

(Grounation is also known as the anniversary of Haili

Selassie’s visit to Jamaica )

This is a holiday in rastafari that commemorates the

anniversary of Haile Selassie’s visit to Jamaica in 1966. It is

celebrated on the 21st of April every year by rastafaris all

over the world. The “Abu Ye! Abu Ye Abu ye! Abu ye!” chant

is an element of Grounation Day festivities.

To the rastafarians grounation means liberation.

THE rastas celebrate this holiday by smoking cannabis as a

sacrament, listening to reggae music and communal singing,

and their desires for eating unadulterated and unprocessed

food.
