Read the passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.
Contacts between Japan and the rest of the world have grown a great deal in the twentieth century. In the
last thirty years, business contacts between Japan and the West have become very important. Many foreign
companies now have offices in Japan and Japanese businessmen do business around the world.
Differences between Japanese and Western ways of doing business, however, often bewilder foreign
businessmen and make doing business in Japan difficult for foreigners. The American businessman, for
example, wants to start talking immediately. He wants quick decisions. He does not wait. The Japanese, on the
other hand, likes to arrive at decisions gradually after giving them a great deal of thought.
Another thing foreign businessmen have difficulty in understanding is when a Japanese means “Yes” or “No”.
While in English, it’s easy to simply say “No” to something we do not want to do, in Japanese, to refuse an
invitation or a request with a direct “No”, or a similar phrase, is believed to be impolite, selfish or unfriendly.
4
THPT MAC ĐĨNH CHI – ĐỀ CƯƠNG ANH 12 –HỌC KỲ I, NĂM HỌC 2021-2022
Therefore, instead of saying “No” directly, the Japanese have developed many ways to avoid using the word.
These enable them to avoid hurting other people’s feelings. However, this often makes communication with the
Japanese difficult for foreigners to understand and follow.
12. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. It’s not always easy for foreigners to do business in Japan.
B. Japan is an important country for businessmen.
C. Business contacts between Japan and the West are important.
D. Japan welcomes other countries to put offices in their country.
13. What does the word “bewilder” in paragraph probably mean?
A. discourage B. confuse C. tire D. scare
14. What does the word “immediately” in paragraph probably mean?
A. at once B. on time C. precisely D. timely
15. Why is it difficult for the Japanese to say “No” to something?
A. Because their language doesn’t have the word “No”.
B. Because saying the word directly is deemed impolite in their culture
C. Because they cannot communicate well with foreigners.
D. Because they often spend a lot of time thinking before giving an answer.
16. What can be inferred from the passage about American businessmen?
A. American businessmen do not express themselves clearly.
B. American businessmen like to say “Yes” and “No”.
C. Americans businessmen often say what they are thinking.

These days, most people in Britain and the US do not wear very formal clothes. But sometimes it is
important to wear the right thing.
Many British people don't think about clothes very much. They just like to be comfortable. When they
go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost anything. At theatres, cinemas and concerts you can
put on what you like from elegant suits and dresses to jeans and sweaters. Anything goes, as long as
you look clean and tidy. However, in Britain as well as the US, men in offices usually wear suits and
ties, and women wear dresses or skirts (not trousers). Doctors, lawyers and business people wear quite
formal clothes. In some hotels and restaurants, men have to wear ties and women wear smart dresses.

In many years, Americans are more relaxed than British people, but they are more careful with their
clothes. At home, or on holiday, most Americans wear informal or sporty clothes. But when they go
out in the evening, they like to look elegant. In good hotels and restaurants, men have to wear jackets
and ties, and women wear pretty clothes and smart hairstyles.
It is difficult to say exactly what people wear informal or formal in Britain and the US, because
everyone is different. If you are not sure what to wear, watch what other people do and then do the
same. You'll feel more relaxed if you don't look too different from everyone else.
