➢ Describe handpicking as a method of separating easily identifiable
materials from a mixture;
➢ Analyze the process of scooping and flotation as a technique in separating
mixtures; and
➢ Utilize the methods of handpicking, scooping and flotation in simple
household chores.

What you will need:


4 clear plastic/glass containers
1 large bowl
stopwatch or timer
10 pieces clothes buttons
10 pieces small stones
10 pieces of coins
10 pieces mongo seeds

What you will do:


1. Mix the clothes buttons, small stones, coins, and mongo seeds in a large bowl
and describe the appearance of the mixture.
2. Start the timer.
3. Pick the individual components of the mixture one at a time.
4. Record how much time you will spend in separating each component.
5. Use the table below to record your findings.

Activity 2: Float and Scoop!

What you will need:


1 large size basin
1 pail or bucket
15 pieces small plastic balls
15 pieces glass marbles
15 pieces of one-peso coin
1 small size scooper
1 pail of clean tap water

What you will do:

1. Pour and mix the plastic balls, glass marbles, and one-peso coin in the basin.
2. Pour the water in the basin.
3. Scoop the components that float in the water and put it in the pail.
