Design of sheet piles

ii) Embedded walls (sheet piles)

Sheet piles form a continuous wall for waterfront structures,
such as pleasure boat launching facilities and dock structures.

Sheet piles: a) Cantilever sheet piles, 2) Anchored sheet piles

a) Cantilever sheet piles
Recommended for walls of moderate size: 6 m or less, measured
above the dredge line.

b) Anchored piles
When the height of the backfill material behind a cantilever sheet-
pile wall exceeds about tying the wall near the top to anchor plates,
anchor walls, or anchor piles becomes more economical.
The two basic methods of designing anchored sheet-pile walls are
(a) the free earth support method and (b) the fixed earth support
method.

Example:
An anchored sheet pile is placed 1 m below the ground level behind
the sheet pile as in figure below. Calculate the minimum depth of
embedment (d) to provide stability using:
a) the Eurocode 7 (EC 7) Geo limit state approach and,
b) the gross pressure method taking FS for passive resistance = 2

ϕ’ = 30o
