Gender denotes sex. There are four genders: masculine gender, feminine gender, common
gender, and neuter gender.
Masculine gender: He is a good boy. (He and boy are in the masculine gender because they
denote the male sex.)
Feminine gender: She is a pretty girl. (She and girl are in the feminine gender because they
denote the female sex.)
Common gender: The child is playing. (Child is in the common gender because child may mean
male or female.)
Neuter gender: The tree has lost its leaves. (Tree and its are in the neuter gender because they
indicate objects which have no sex. Neuter gender means no sex.)

A. Change the italicized nouns in the following sentences into the opposite gender.
B. Fill each blank with the correct pronoun. Be careful of the gender.
1. My uncle sold his house. He was able to get a very good price for it. Although, it was not new,
it's newly painted.
2. When Juana finished reading her book, she gave it to bother. She told him that it was a very
interesting book.
3. Pilar asked her father if he could give some money, her father asked her what she wanted
the money for. Pilar said that she had lost a book. She had to pay for it.
4. Anotinio likes to go swimming. One day he went to a small creek near his house. The water
was very clear. It was also very cool. It was really a beautiful stream.
5. Mario had a pet dog. He love it very much, he taught it many tricks. It sit up and beg for
food.
6. Juanito helped his mother clean the house, he was helpful in the house. She loved her son
very much.
7. Delfin's mother told him to take care of his little sister. The mother went out and he was left
with the child. Soon child began to cry. He didn't know what to do. He gave her some candy but
she threw it away.
8. Carlos is much taller than his sister. Yet she is older than Carlos. She's five years older than
him. She is the oldest in the family.
9. We watched the cat play with its tail, it would move it's tail back and forth and then try to
catch it. My baby brother laughed when he saw the cat, he tried to get down from my arms,
wanted to play with the cat.
10. Jose's aunt sends him nice presents. He thanks her for it. Once she gave him a wrist watch.
He was very happy to get it.
