EXAMPLE TEXT
A penny for your thoughts? If it’s a 1943 copper penny, it
could be worth as much as fifty thousand dollars. In 1943,
most pennies were made out of steel since copper was needed
for World War II, so, the 1943 copper penny is ultra-rare.
Another rarity is the 1995 double penny. These pennies were
mistakenly double-stamped, so they have overlapping dates
and letters. If it’s uncirculated, it’d easily fetch $25,000 at an
auction. Now that’s a pretty penny.
EXAMPLE SUMMARY
A. This text is about pennies.
• This text is too short to be a summary.
• It does not include key ideas.
EXAMPLE SUMMARY
B. The 1943 copper penny is worth a lot of money.
Copper was hard to get during the war so there
aren’t many of them. The 1955 double-die penny is
worth a lot too. These pennies were stamped twice
by accident.
• Too much unnecessary stuff.
• Main idea is not clear.
EXAMPLE SUMMARY
C. This text is about two very rare and valuable
pennies: the 1943 copper penny and the 1955
double-die penny.
• Includes key information.
• Does not include unnecessary information.
• A complete sentence.

Arachne was a weaver who acquired such skill in her
art that she ventured to challenge Athena, goddess of
war, handicraft, and wisdom. Athena wove a tapestry
showing the gods with their good deeds, while
Arachne depicted them as foolish. Enraged at the
perfection of her rival's work, Athena tore it to shreds
and cursed Arachne into a spider.

When one hears the term “reality” applied to a television show, one
might expect that the events occurred naturally or, at the least, were
not scripted but this is not always the case. Many reality shows occur
in unreal environments, like rented mansions occupied by film crews.
These living environments do not reflect what most people
understand to be “reality.” Worse, there have been accusations that
events not captured on film were later restaged by producers. Worse
still, some involved in the production of “reality” television claim
that the participants were urged to act out storylines premeditated by
producers. With such accusations floating around, it’s no wonder
many people take reality TV to be about as real as the sitcom.
A. When one hears the term “reality” applied to a television
show, one might expect that the events occurred naturally or, at
the least, were not scripted but this is not always the case.
B. Reality TV shows are not very realistic because they are
filmed in urealistic places, contain restaged events, and may
be scripted.
C. Reality TV shows do not reflect reality. With such accusations

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 22) — Millions of students trooped back to
school on Monday — the first time most of them will be attending face-to-face
classes in over two years due to the pandemic. Public and private schools nationwide
reopened, with many returning to in-person classes. Over 28.03 million students
have enrolled this academic year, the Department of Education (DepEd) said. More
than 24,000 schools, or 46%, will implement five days of face-to-face classes, while
29,721 schools will continue to hold classes through blended learning from August to
October, according to DepEd data. By November 2, all public and private schools are
required by DepEd to transition to full in-person classes. Due to the threat of the
COVID-19 pandemic, face-to-face classes were not allowed in school years 2020-
2021 and 2021-2022. At the start of the global health crisis, schools shifted to
distance learning. For over two years since the pandemic struck in March 2020, the
Philippines was among the few countries in the world where schools had not fully
opened for in-person classes. The much-awaited return to face-to-face classes was
met with a protest. Members of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers staged a
sunrise protest in Mendiola, Manila City to call for the safe reopening of classes.
The protesters also asked the government to improve the salary and benefits of
teachers.
