DISCUSSION

Summarizing

- A summary is a brief overview of an entire discussion or

argument.
- Summaries leave out detail or examples that may distract the
reader from the most important information, and they simplify
complex arguments, grammar and vocabulary.

PARAPHRASING

- Refers to stating someone else’s work or idea in your own

words at roughly the same level of details.

GUIDELINES IN SUMMARIZING:

1. A summary should be based on the original piece

2. A summary should be kept short and simple
3. Use your own words
4. Know thhe main ideas and the key information in what you are
summarizing
5. Keep the objectivity
6. A summary must be comprehensive
7. A summary needs to be concise.
8. Coherence is a key feature of a good summary.

(The rest of the discussion will be presented by the teacher.)

3. Engagement
Learning Task 4: LET’S ANALYZE!
Direction: Read and analyze the text. Choose the letter of the
correct answer.
1. When one hears the term “reality” applied to a television show,
one might expect that the events occurred naturally or, at the
least, were not scripted but this is not always the case. Many
reality shows occur in unreal environments, like rented
mansions occupied by film crews. These living environments do
not reflect what most people understand to be “reality.” Worse,
there have been accusations that events not captured on film
were later restaged by producers. Worse still, some involved in
the production of “reality” television claim that the participants
were urged to act out a story lines premeditated by producers.
With such accusations floating around, it’s no wonder many
people take reality TV to be about as real as the sitcom.

looked very pretty, elegant, and graceful because of the
necklace she borrowed. She was so glorified by her beauty
that she became very careless. When they got home she
realized the necklace was missing. They searched for it
everywhere in the house. Matilda’s husband went out to
search the streets but returned empty-handed. They found
a similar kind of necklace. The cost of the necklace was
thirty-six thousand francs. Mrs. Loisel did not tell her friend
about the lost necklace instead she just buy another
similar necklace to replace it. They worked hard for around
ten years just to pay the debts they had for buying a new
necklace.
