B. Solve each problem. Show your solution and box your final answer.
1. Nine hundred twelve candies were distributed equally to some students. If four more
students were present, then each would have received 19 candies less. How many
students were there originally?
2. Robin runs 5 kilometers around the campus in the same length of time as he can walk
3 km from his house to school. If he runs 4 kph faster than he walks, how fast does
Robin walk?
3. Two cars left an intersection at the same time, one heading north, and the other due
west. Sometimes later, they were exactly 100 miles apart. The car headed north gone
20 miles farther than the car headed west. How far had each car travelled?

4. In a meeting, everyone shook hands with everyone else. A man arrived and shook
hands only with some people that he knew which increased the number of
handshakes by 50%. If the total number of handshakes was 9, how many people were
there at the meeting before the man arrived?
5. A father has 2 sons where one is 5 years older the other. The sum of the squares of the
2 son’s ages is 97. If the squares of the sons’ ages are written beside each other, the
result is the square of the father’s age. How old is the father?
6. A rectangular glass plot is 12 m long and 6 m wide. It is surrounded by a walk of
uniform width. If the area of the remaining grass plot is 40 square meters, find the
width of the walk.
7. A man has 120 m of fencing. With it he encloses 1152 square meters of his garden,
the boundary fence forming one side of the enclosure. What are the possible
dimensions of the enclosure?
8. The Mathematics club paid Php750 for its picture for the school yearbook, the cost
being shared equally by the club members. If there had been 10 more members, each
member’s share would have been Php20 less. How many ,members in the club?

examination; and the tutor’s fee is to be shared by each student. If two additional
students join the group, the cost to each student is reduced by Php200. What is the cost
