FINDING THE VOLUME OF A RECTANGULAR PRISM

USING CUBIC CENTIMETERS AND CUBIC METERS

I. Learning Competency with Code

Finding the volume of a rectangular prism using cubic centimeters and
cubic meters (M4ME-IVA-55)

II. Background Information for Learners

Learning how to find the volume of a rectangular prism is a very important

skill a grade four pupil like you should learn.
This Learning Activity Sheet for the week deals with finding a volume of a
rectangular prism and use this to solve problems on volume.
Rectangular prism is a solid figure that has six faces, twelve edges and
eight vertices. Vertex is the corner of a shape. Edge is a segment where two
faces of a prism meet.
Volume is the amount of space that a solid figure encloses. It is measured
in cubic units. Units should always be included whenever you are working with
measurements. Units should always be kept consistent within a calculation.
This means that every dimension of any given figure should carry the same
unit.

Example 1:
A. Volume of a Rectangular Prism

The volume ( V ) of a rectangular prism is

determined by multiplying the measures of the
length ( l ), width ( w ), and height ( h ).This is also
written as V=lwh cubic units or unit cube.
Volume = length x width x height
Formula:

Example 1: Find the volume of the

rectangular prism. height 3 cm

length 6 cm width 2 cm
1
Step 1: Identify the length, the width length = l = 6 cm
and the height of the width = w = 2 cm
rectangular prism. height = h = 3 cm

Step 2: Use the formula: V = l x w x h

V = l x w xh = 6x2x3

Step 3: Write the final answer. V = 36 cubic units

Example 2 :

In a Science laboratory, the teacher told Jirvanne to fill up a rectangular

container with fine sand. The container is 4 centimetres long, 2 centimetres wide
and 3 centimetres high. The teacher told the class to find the volume of the
container.
What does the teacher mean by the volume? How will Jirvanne find the
volume of the container?

Let us visualize the container with its content.

height - 2cm

width - 3cm
length - 4cm

4 rows of 2 cubes
2 layers of 4 rows of 3 cubes
24 cubes in all

Volume is the amount of space the solid figure contains. It is measured in cubic
units.
Study these examples.
1. Jirvanne’s container has the following dimensions:
Length - 4 cm
Width - 3 cm
Height - 2 cm
2
How many cubes does the container hold?
By counting, there are 24 cubes in all.

What is an easier way to find the volume of a rectangular prism other than
counting the number of cubic units?
You count the number of cubes to get the volume of the rectangular
prism.

How do you find the volume?

You multiply the number of rows by the number of columns and by the
number of layers to find the volume.
V = 4 rows x 2 columns x 3 layers
= 24 cubes

Let V be the volume of a rectangular prism. If l is the length, w is the width,

and h is the height of the rectangular prism,
then

V = l x w xh
= 4 cm x 2 cm x 3 cm
= 24 cm3 or cubic units

Therefore, the volume of the rectangular prism is 24 cubic units.
