The proposal was expanded to include welding prepa ation for flanges and val was also given to Pipe Febrication Institute Standard ES-L ‘The third draft reviewed by Subcommittee 3, Subgroup 6 (now Subcommittee F), of the B16 Sect onal Committee was forwarded to the Committee, cosponsor organizations, and then ASA for approval. Fina approval was given on September 14, 1955, with the designation ASA BLE25-1955, Revisions were developed as a need for clarification and improvements became known and. were approved as ASA B15.25-1958 and ASA B16,25-1964, After ASA reorganized as the American National Standards Instijute (ANSI) andl the Sectional Committee became American National Standarcs Committee B15, a further revision was approved as ANSI B16.25-1972. ‘Subcommittee F immec iately began work on a major expansion and updating of the Standard, adding ilustrations and requirements for welding end configurations applicable toa number of specific circumstances, including cast steel and alloy valves. When a draft had been developed that overcame the many prob ems and conflicting demands, the Standards Committee, cosecretariat organizations, and ANSI concurred in approval of ANSI B16.25-1979 on July 18, 1979. Tin 1982, American Nati mal Standards Committee B16 was reorganized as an ASME committee operating under procede res accredited by ANSI. In the 1986 edition, inch dimensions were established as the standerd, and numerous changes in text ancl format were macle. Notes for illustrations were also cliritied, Following approval by the Standards Committee and. ASME, approval as an Americar National Standard was given by ANSI on October 8, 1986, with the new des gnation ASME/ ANSI B16.25-1986. In 1992, the subcommittee revised the requirements for the preparation of the inside diameter ‘of welding end. The refersnces in Annex B were also updated. After public review and approval by ASME, this edition was approved by ANSI on October 26, 1992, with the new designation ASME B16.25-1992. In the 1997 edition, metric dimensions were added as an independent but equal standard to the inch units. An Annes: was also added to reference quality system requirements. Following approval by the Standards Committee and ASME, this revision to the 1992 edition of B16.25 was approved asan American National Standard by ANSI on April 17,1997, with the new designation ASME B16.25-1997. In the 2003 edition, th. reference standard dates were updated. There were clarifications to text made to address inquiries. Tolerances on bevel angles were modified slightly. Following approval by the Standards Committve and ASME, this revision to the 1997 edition of B16.25 was approved as an American National Standard by ANSI on December 17, 2003, with the new designation ASME B16.25-2003. In the 2007 edition, buttwelding end data were extended to cover requirements for sizes up to NPS 48 (DN 1200). The reference data were updated, and the interpretation section was removed from the Stands rd. In this 2012 edition, th> references in Mandatory Appendix Il have been updated, and notes have been updated in the included tables. This revision was approved by ANSI on October 22, 2012. ASME B16.25-2012 SUMMARY OF CHANGES: Following approval by the ASME B16 Committee and ASME, and after public review, ASME B16.25-2012 was approved by the American National Standards Institute on October 22, 2012, ASME B16.25-2012 includes the following changes identified by a mcrgin note, (12) Page Location Change 9 Table 1 Note (2) added 4 Table 11 Note (2) added 18 Mandatory Appendix Updated INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK ees eoamerianemcts LL ASME 816.25-2012 BUTTWELDING ENDS 1 SCOPE 1.1 General ‘This Standard cavers the preparation of buttwelding ends of piping components to be joined into a piping system by welding, Itineludes requirements for welding bevels, for external and internal shaping of heavy-wall compenents, and for preparation of internal ends (including dimensions and tolerances). Coverage includes preparation for joints with the following: (a) no backing rings () split or noncontinuous backing rings (c) solid or continuous backing rings a) consumable insert rings (e) yas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) of the root pass Details of preparation for any backing ring must be specified when ordering the component 1.2 Application This Standard applies to any metallic materials for which a welding procedure can be satisfactorily ‘qualified but does not prescribe specific welding pro cesses or procedures. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, it does not apply to welding ends conforming to ASME B16, B16.9, oF B16.47 1.3 Relevant Units This Standard states values in both $1 (Metric) and US. Customary units. These systems of units are to be regarded separately as standard, Within the text, the US. Customary units are shown in parentheses or in a separate table that appears in Mandatory Appendix 1 The values stated in each system are not exact equiva: lents; therefore, itis required that each system of units be used independently of the other, Combining values from the two systems constitutes nonconformance with the Standard, 1.4 Size Nominal pipe size (NPS), followed by a dimensionless ‘number, is the designation for nominal fitting size. NPS is related to the reference nominal diameter (DN) used in international standards. The relationship is typically as follows: 1 Nr P 5 x 2» 1 23 % 2 as 0 2 30 2 6 3 ®0 4 100 For NPS24, the related DN = 25 x NPS. 1.5. Referenced Standards Standards and specifications adopted by reference in this Standard are shown in Mandatory Appendix II. It isnot considered practical to identify the specific eclition ‘of each standard and specification in the individual ref- ferences, Instead, th specific edition reference is identi- fied in Mandatory Appendix I. A product made in conformance with a prior edition of referenced stan- dards will be considered to be in conformance, even though the edition reference may be changed in a subse- quent revision of te standard. 1.6 Quality Systenis Nonmandatory requirements relating to the mani turer’s quality system program are described in Nonmandatory Ap sendin A, 1.7 Convention For determining conformance with this Standard, the convention for fix ng significant digits where limits (maximum and minimum values) ate specified shall be as defined in ASTIV E29, This requires that an observed of calculated value be rounded off to the nearest unit in the last right-hand digit used for expressing the limit. Decimal values and tolerances do not imply a particular method of measurement. 2. TRANSITION CONTOURS Figure 1 delineat2s the maximum envelope in which transitions from welding bevel to the outer surface of the component and ‘rom the root face to the inner surface of the component mnust lie. Exceptas specified in Note (3) to Fig. , and as othe rwise specified by the purchaser, the exact contour within this envelope is the manufacturer's option, provided it maintains the specified minimum ASME B16.25-2012 wall thickness, has no slopes steeser than those indi- cated for the respective regions, anc. includes the proper surface for backing rings if specified. 3 WELDING BEVEL DESIGN 3.1. Bevels for Other Than GTAW Root Pass (a) Components having nomina, wall thicknesses of 3 mm (0.12 in) and less shall have ends eat square or slightly chamferee (iy Components having nominal wall thicknesses over 3mm (0.12 in) to 22 mm (088 in) inclusive shall have single angle bevels as illustrated in Fig. 2 (©) Components having nominal wall thicknesses greater than 22mm (0,88in.) shall have compound angle bevels as illustrated in Fig. 3 3.2. Bevels for GTAW Root Pass (@) Components having nomina. seal thicknesses of 3 mm (0 12 in.) an! loss shall have ends cut sqare oF slightly chamfered. (b) Components having nominal wall thicknesses over 3. mm (0.12 in.) to 10 mm (0.38 in.) inclusive shall have 37-dey = 2!deg bevels or slightly concave bevels (see Fig. 4) (c) Components having nominal wall thicknesses over 10 mm (038 in.) to 28 mm (1.0 in) inclusive shall have bevels as shown in Fig, 5 (d) Components having nominal wall thicknesses sgvater than 25 mm (1.0 in.) shall have bevels as shown in Fig. 6 3.3 Outside Diameter at Welding Ends Dimension A shall be either that specified in the applicable component standard or taat specified in the purchaser's component specificaion. In the absence Of a requirement for dimension Aix a component stan- dard ora purchaser's specification, the values for dimen- sion A in Table 1 or Table I-l may be used. 4 PREPARATION OF INSIDE DIAMETER OF WELDING END 4.4 General Preparation of che inside diameter at the end of a component shall be in accordance with one of the follow ing, as specified by the purchaser: fa) Components to be welded w thout backing rings shall meet the requirements of the sandard or specifica- tion for the component (6) Components to be welded using split or noncon- tinuous backing rings shall be contoured with a cylindi- cal surface at the end as shown in Fig. 2, illustration (b) and Fig. 3, illusteetion (b). If the backing ring contour is other than rectangular, details ust be furnished by the purchaser. ‘Eotondoy Ae owe mn (©) Components to be welded using solid or continu- ‘ous backing rings shall be contoured with a cylindrical ‘or tapered surface at the end as specified by the pur- chaser. End preparation is illustrated in Fig. 2, illustra- tion (c) and Fig. 3 illustration (c) for rectangular ends ‘and in Fig. 2, illustration (d) and Fig. 3, illustration (@) for tapered ends (a) Components to be welded using consumable insert rings or GTAW root pass shall be contoured with a cylindrical surface at the end as shown in Figs. 4 through 6, 4.2 Dimension Values for dimension C shown in Fig, 2, illustrations (c) and (d); Fig. 3, illustrations (c) and (a); and Figs. 5 and 6 can be determined by the following equations: (SI Units) = A~ OD. tolerance ~2* tin 025) (US. Customary Units) A= OD. tolerance ~2.% fain -O010— Q) where A specified outside pipe diameter at welding end (see para. 3.3) tundertolerance on the pipe O.D. from the applicable piping specification 1 manufacturing tolerance for pipe wall thickness per applicable pipe specification, mm (in) # = nominal wall thickness of pipe, mm (in) plus machining tolerance on Bore C, mm in.) OD. tolerance = tein 0.25 (0.010) = Based on tolerances specific to ASTM A106 anel A335 pipe, including an undertolerance on wall thickness of 12.5%, eqs. (1) and (2) can be defined as follows: (SI Linits) C= A-079-2« 0875-025 (US, Customary Units) C= A 00a ~2 x 08751 - 0010 Tables 1 and I+ list the C values for pipe with an uundertolerance of 12.5% on wall thickness, including, ASTM A106 and A335 pipe, in sizes NPS 24 through NPS 48. For pipe with a pipe wall thickness undertoler- ance other than 12.5%, do not use the C data from Tables 1 and I [see para. 43(a] 4.3 Exceptions (a) For pipe or tubing varying from the ASTM A106 and A335 types, having different wall thickness and /or ASME 816.25-2012, oulside diameter tolerances (such as forged and bored pipe), the foregoing equations may be inapplicable. Equations (1) and (2) may be used to determine C for these applications. The purchaser shall specify the C dimension when Tables 1 and 1 data do not apply. (0) For components in smaller sizes and lower sched- ule numbers, it may be necessary to deposit weld metal oon the inside cliameter (LD.)or use thicker wall materials in order to machine the backing ring while maintaining required wall thickness, This condition may also arise when using material whose nominal dimensions indi cate suificient metal but whose actual LD. considering tolerances, is large enough to require additional metal. 5 TOLERANCES (See Figs. 2, 3, 5, and 6) 5.1 Dimension B Values for the LD. at the welding end [see dimension B, Fig. 2, illustrations (a) and (b) and Fig. 3, illustrations (a) and (b)] shall be as specified in the appli cable standard or specification for the component. 5.2 Welding Bevels, Root Face, and Dimension C Values of welding bevels, soot face, and dimension C shall be as indicated in Figs. 2 through 6, Large diameter pipe and fittings with a relatively thin, wall have a tendency to spring out-of-round after removal from the machining fixture. For this reason, the measured dliar eters may vary with orientation, A tolerance of +0.25 mm (+0010 in.) applies to the average C diameter in Figs. 2 and 3, illustrations (c) and (a). A tolerance of +0.25 mm, ~1.02 mm (+0.010 in, ~0.040 in.) applies to the average C diameter for Figs. 5 and 6. 5.3 Dimension A Unless otherwise specified, the tolerances for dimen- sion A shall be as follows: size Tolerance NPSes 425 mm, 0.79 mm (40.10 in, L081 im) NISze +40) mm, -0.78 mam (48.16 i, 4084 i) 5.
