Element Research

and PowerPoint
Bloom’s Taxonomy Alignment to Standards
SC.O.C.2.7
Students will analyze periodic trends in atomic size, ionic size, electronegativity,
 Evaluation ionization energy and electron affinity.
 Synthesis
 Analysis SC.O.C.2.5
 Application Students will illustrate Lewis’ dot structures for representative (Main group)
 Comprehension elements.
 Knowledge
SC.O.C.2.1
Students will classify pure substances by their chemical and physical properties.
KUD

Students will KNOW: The students will understand and research an element from the periodic table, collecting
the data for all of it traits and characteristic. Getting the students to understand the core concepts of atomic
size, ionic size, electronegativity, ionization energy, and many other things like atomic mass, atomic number,
proton count, etc.

Students will UNDERSTAND THAT: The student will understand the general idea that connects to why each
element is different and how those atomic size changes can affect the difference between the elements
physically and chemically.

Students will DO: The students will be researching an element of there choose based on what is available
when they pick (no repeats) Then they are going to create a PowerPoint that states all the information that
they research on the element. To then present it in class and answer questions about the element’s
characteristics. Then after they will patriciate in a classroom Kahoot to see if they researched enough or
listened to the presentations.
Assessment
How are you collecting evidence of student understanding?
How are you using that information to inform your instruction?
Summative & Formative Assessments, Performance Task(s) & Other Evidence i.e. Pre-assessments, Unit
Tests, Quizzes, Essays, Exit Cards, etc.

Pre-assessment: The students will take a participation quiz to see how much they know about the
periodic table and its elements before researching.

Formative Assessment: The students being able to research, create, and preset their PowerPoints well.
As well as performing well on the Kahoot at the need of the presentations and listening to their peers
during their own presentations.

Summative Assessment: The students being able to create a PowerPoint with accurate information
about their element that they can then present Infront of the class well and be able to answer possible
questions from their peers.
Instructional Learning Plan
How will the lesson(s) support student acquisition, meaning-making and transfer of content knowledge,
understandings and skills?

Learning Activities: (Brief summary & description of how you will orchestrate instructional best practices during this
lesson to ensure student understanding i.e. Differentiated Instruction, Marzano, National Board Core Propositions etc.

Differentiated Instruction- The main differentiated instruction within this lesson is the balance between teamwork and
individual work because the big part of the project is individual, but to do good overall the students need to work together
and listen to each other to learn the most effectively and efficiently.

Materials:
 Computer / Tablet
 Access to PowerPoint
 Internet
 Periodic Table of Elements
 Pre-made Kahoot test from teacher
 Pre-test document

Lesson Plan:
 First, Introducing the topic of the Periodic Table of Elements and explaining some needed terms like
proton, neutron, electron, etc.
 Then give the students a pre-test on the periodic table before they have really researched it, so that
we can see how much they know about the periodic table.
 Assign and let the students pick out what element they would like to research from the first 20+
elements depending on how many students/groups are needed
 Spend 1 to 2 days letting the students research and create their PowerPoints
 For the next lesson, let them practice their presentations and possible record themselves if they feel
that that would be beneficial for practicing
 The students will then present their PowerPoints in the next class and share all of their PowerPoints
with the class to prepare for the Kahoot over the night and study
 Ending the project, we will have a Kahoot test to test the students research, listening, and studying
skills.

(Gifted/Special Needs)

Lesson Closure(s):
 Students will take the post research Kahoot test with the class.
 The students will need to understand these elements and the periodic table in general because being in
chemistry understanding the base elements is very important for the rest of the semester/year.

Formative Assessment:
 This will be the students taking the Kahoot quiz after they have researched and listened to their
peers PowerPoints; however, I will also be watching them as they research and create their
PowerPoints to make sure they don’t add unnecessary information or get completely sidetracked
instead of researching their element.
Extended Learning (Homework)
 Knowing the elements and their characters are necessary for everything in chemistry.
 The students need to be able to remember and retain the information they have learning about their
own element, but also their classmates’ elements because as we continue in the course not having to
look at the periodic table or just remember the facts about the base elements can be very helpful.
Lesson Accommodations (Special needs and gifted)
 Can be changed into a physical project by creating an atom ball instead of a PowerPoint and by using a
textbook instead of the internet (Unable to use internet)
 Make into a more of a group activity (Gifted/Special Needs)
 One on One instruction from the teacher (Gifted/Special Needs)
 Can have assistance on presenting their project (Gifted/Special Needs)
