SPEECHES

A speech is a formal talk given to an audience. It’s formal and structured

depending on the audience/occasion and subject. Occasions may include:
Funeral/requiem mass
Farewell ceremony
Welcome party
Weddings
Thanksgiving among others

Distinction should be drawn between planned and impromptu speeches. The

formal are well structured and written down before delivery. During delivery, the
speaker must attract the audience’s attention through the use of verbal and
non-verbal cues/signals.
Types of Speeches
Informative

This gives facts and specific information about the topic. It’s serious and uses
statistics, physical examples among others
Persuasive

The speaker intends to convince the audience to take a particular course of

action.
Entertaining
This is usually comic in nature and meant to arouse laughter.
Components of a Speech
The title

This is written on top though not read. It gives details of the speaker, the
occasion, topic, date and venue.
Protocol

This is list of all dignitaries or important persons at a function in hierarchy or

organized from highest to lowest. This is made with the title/portfolio and name
of the person. It can be written in various formats but the paragraph is the best.
Important to note is that a disorganized protocol or just saying protocol
observed is no protocol and attracts no marks at all. The protocol varies
depending on the occasion.
Greeting/ salutation

It’s usually a simple good morning, good afternoon or good evening. However,
this may change for the eulogy.
Self-introduction

The audience needs to know the person talking to them. This includes name and
portfolio/office/designation.
Introduction of the topic or subject
The speaker gives the audience the reason for addressing them.
Body of the speech
This is the gist of the speech.
Signing and authentication

This is important for those speeches to be circulated to audience or the media.

It’s done at the bottom left hand corner. The signature comes first followed by
the name in capital letters and lastly designation/office.

Assuming you were present at the debate, write the presentation you would
give on the proposition side.

SPEECH TO BE DELIVERED BY MALE SHADRACH AT A DEBATE BY THE OLAN HIGH

SCHOOL DEBATING CLUB ON THE SEVENTH JULY TWO THOUSAND TWENTY AT MID-
DAY IN THE SCHOOL DINING HALL ON THE TOPIC: PREGNANT GIRLS SHOULD NOT
BE ALLOWED BACK IN SCHOOLS.
The chairperson, Hon Nankya Marlon, the secretary, Hon. Namale
Samantha and all dignitaries’ present protocol observed. Good afternoon!

In front of you is Hon. Male Shadrach, a student of this mighty school in

Senior Three West and a member of the debating club. I am here to propose
the motion: Pregnant Girls Should Not Be Allowed Back in Schools.

Pregnancy refers to that time between fertilization and labour. Fertilization

occurs after a woman has live sex with a fertile man. Pregnancy takes nine
months. On many occasions, our sisters have dropped out of school due to this
problem. However, others have taken the path of illicit abortions. We all
remember the late Hellen Apio. That damsel was impregnated by an unknown
lad after she was inebriated during a party. Her august parents only discovered
after a test at school. Unfortunately, she joined the heavenly choir after her
inauspicious mother forced into an abortion.

To set the ball rolling, these wenches would set a bad example to rest.
Pregnancy is evidence of live sex. When the rest of the students see a pregnant
colleague going about her business unabated, they may also follow suit.
Realistically, some few naïve nymphets have got pregnant from rape and
defilement. A bigger chunk have instead got so due consensual sex. In other
words, these have reaped where they sowed and should suffer the
repercussions.

Secondly, pregnancy requires delicate medical, social and psychological

treatment which may not be available at school. In its initial stages, a pregnant
mother will suffer from nausea, fever, morning sickness and a variety of other
maladies which require day long attention. Most schools have only a single
nurse responsible for the entire population. Nursing two pregnant girls would be
a tall order for the medical personnel. Therefore such people should return to
their domicile for proper medical attention.

In addition to the above, many of our sisters are the architects of their
own misery. I will drive this august house back to the late Hellen Apio. While here,
the ravishingly beautiful wench was the apple of every boy’s eye. The towering
statuesque had been gifted with the most mouth-watering features. Her chubby
cheeks were blessed with prominent dimples and a luminous smile. Despite the
lass’ looks, she seemed to possess no brains or ambitions. In her owns words, she
was quoted on many occasions stating that she needed no education but her
looks and a wealthy man. She was brought to the discipline committee several
times after being arrested with different boys in compromising situations. The
senior woman lectured her on the demerits of promiscuity but to no avail.
Unfortunately, she paid for her lechery with her life. May the Omniscient Lord
forgive me if I have sounded insensitive but my sympathy may not go to girls in
this caliber!

In conclusion, from birth our sisters face a lot challenges that we boys
don’t. However it’s unrealistic to defend a school going teenager that gets
pregnant. From primary, we are taught about the reproductive cycle in details,
so those that don’t use the knowledge should blame none but themselves. For

The Eulogy

It’s important to note that speeches have the same format though performed
on different functions. The eulogy in this case is one said at a funeral or requiem
mass. A requiem mass is the last church service that is said before a person
buried. This may be by the grave site or in a church, synagogue or mosque. Here
family and friends are given a chance to pay their last respects and talk about
the deeds and things that they will hold in memory. In African culture, the evil
deeds of the deceased are never brought to light. This is out of respect for the
bereaved family.

Distinction should be drawn between the letter of condolence and the eulogy.
The former is the consumption of a select audience especially the bereaved
family but the latter is for all the mourners.

EULOGY TO BE DELIVERED BY NANKYA MARLON AT THE FUNERAL OF THE LATE

TUSIIME DOREEN AT SHEEMA VILLAGE ON EIGHTEENTH JULY, TWO THOUSAND
TWENTY AT FOUR

The bereaved family, the parish priest Sheema Church of Uganda, fellow
mourners, I greet you in the name of our Lord. Thank you for coming to
accompany our beloved sister to her final resting place.
I am Nankya Marlon, a student of Olan High School and a boon
companion of the late and a classmate. I am here to represent my mates that
could not mobilize to trek this journey because of the Covid pandemic among
other factors.

The news of Doreen’s death hit me and rest of the Olan community like a
sledge hammer. It’s a pity that the Omnipotent Lord only calls those that
beautiful in being and spirit. I met Tusiime way back when we had just joined
Olan High School. As little girls we both scared of boarding school but she took
the courage to comfort me and look after me like a sister. Gradually, we
became birds of a feather. The late has a hardworking, religious and genuine
person. The entire class will miss her as a bosom friend.

To the bereaved family, we supplicate before the Lord to find the

medicine to heal your hemorrhaging hearts on the loss of this angel. With me I
have carried a condolence message of a million shillings to help in the burial
arrangements. May the Lord forgive the driver that knocked her to death!May
the she rest in peace.
