Hi Paula,
I’m sitting in front of my mirror and I don’t like what I see! My hairstyle is ugly
and I hate my clothes. I need a new fashion style.
Please look at the two photos in the attachment. In the first photo, there’s a
blonde girl. I think she looks great! Of course, my hair is shorter and darker than
hers, but I like her hairstyle. What do you think of the way she looks? In the
second picture, the Japanese girl is wearing very colourful clothes and
accessories: a pink sweater, a purple skirt, yellow and pink socks, a yellow hat
and a light blue scarf. Do you think she looks pretty?
I want to find the best style for me. You often read fashion magazines and you
always wear amazing clothes. So please tell me: which fashion style is good for
me?
Love,
Jessie
3 Imagine you are Paula, Jessie’s friend, and reply to her e-mail. Give your opinion about the
girls’ appearance in the photos. Then describe the fashion style you like and the best fashion
style for Jessie.

Eye Tracking
Imagine your eyes can control your computer. No, don’t click that
mouse. Don’t touch that keyboard. Use only your eyes. Look at what
you need. Simply, use your eyes to show the computer what you want.
Is this possible? Not yet, but scientists at Imperial College in London are
working on a new form of technology called eye tracking. These scientists are studying
how the human eye moves when a person sees something. According to the
researcher, Professor Yang, eye tracking can make communication between people and
machines easier.
In the future, scientists want to use the technology of eye tracking to help doctors in
surgery. They also plan to use eye tracking to warn sleepy drivers so they don’t cause
an accident. Eye tracking sounds amazing, but you mustn’t throw out your mouse or
your keyboard yet! Research and inventions can take a long time.

2. How do people communicate with a computer in the technology of eye tracking?

In 2002, dolphins saved a fisherman, Grant Dickson, from a group of hungry sharks when Dickson’s
fishing boat sank in a storm off the coast of Australia. Thirty-six-year-old Dickson told the
newspapers about his terrible experience.
There were two other fishermen on the boat with Dickson but they died at sea. Dickson swam to a
small boat after his boat sank. The small boat was turned over, but Dickson held on to it. It wasn’t
easy because Dickson was hurt and bleeding badly. Suddenly, sharks came and swam around him.
One shark moved closer and closer to him. He was terribly frightened. Luckily, right then, some
dolphins appeared and swam around Dickson. Dickson understood the dolphins wanted to help
him, and they did. The dolphins chased away the sharks and saved Dickson’s life.
After almost two days of holding onto the small boat, a ship passed by and rescued Dickson.

1 Read the interview between Police Officer Darcy and the witness of a burglary, John Moore.
Then complete the police report below with information from the dialogue.
Darcy: Hello, I’m Police Officer Darcy. Are you John Moore?
John: Yes, I am.
Darcy: Were you at Globe Bank this morning when two men entered with guns?
John: Yes, I was, and it was very frightening.
Darcy: Can you tell me what happened?
John: I was standing next to the door. It was about 9 o’clock. I was talking to my girlfriend when we heard
a loud noise. The burglars broke a window and ran into the bank. They were shouting very loudly at
everyone. Suddenly, they pointed their guns at one of the workers. They wanted her to give them
money.
Darcy: What happened then?
John: People started screaming while the men were putting money into bags. Then the burglars left.
Darcy: What did they look like?
John: I couldn’t see their faces because they were wearing masks. But they were very tall and they were
wearing jeans and boots. Oh…one of them had a tattoo of a dog’s face on his arm.

Big Dance
The activities take place in schools, sports centres, arts centres, parks,
museums, theatres and shopping centres all over Britain. The Arts
Council thinks that dancing is important for people’s health. This aerobic
activity helps to keep people’s hearts and lungs healthy. It makes their
muscles stronger, too. Dancing also makes them feel happy and it brings
people of different cultures together.
Big Dance shows how popular and fun dancing can be and it introduces
people to different types of music. Now, more British people than ever
enjoy dancing. Each year, nearly five million people take part in dancing
activities in their communities. In fact, today, many school students prefer
dancing to football!

Plastic at Sea
Sea animals and birds are in danger. Hunting and global warming is partly responsible for this, but
the main reason is pollution. The wind blows plastic bags, plastic
bottles and balloons into the sea. Sea animals and birds eat the plastic
because they think it is food. If they eat too much plastic, it can kill
them.
There are millions of plastic bags in the seas and oceans around the
world. The plastic looks like jellyfish, the favourite food of many sea
animals. Balloons are a problem, too. Birds see their bright colours and
mistake them for food. Almost every sea bird in the world has got some
plastic rubbish inside its stomach. Sharp pieces of plastic sometimes cut
the birds’ small stomachs. Toxic substances in the plastic can poison the
birds and kill them.
About 1,000,000 sea birds and 100,000 other sea animals die every year
because of plastic pollution. So, make sure you throw all your plastic
rubbish into a bin!
T F
1. Sea animals and birds are in danger mostly because of hunting.
2. Millions of plastic bags pollute the sea.
3. Sea animals often think plastic bags are jellyfish.
4. Most sea birds don’t eat plastic.
5. Plastic is a toxic material.
6. Almost a million sea animals die every year because of plastic pollution.
