III. READING COMPREHENSION
For thirty year, researchers studying the changes in family dynamics since the rise
of the women’s movement have concluded that , despite gains in the world of
education ,work, and politics , women face a “ stalled revolution “ at home.
According to many studies , men’s familywork has barely changed in reponse to
women’s increased employment . Even though women are working longer hours
on the job
And cutting back their own housework ,men are not picking up the stack.
Our research suggests that these studies were based on unrealistic hopes for instant
transformation. They underestimated the amout of change going on behind the
scenes and thegrowing willing of men to their wives’ new behaviors
and values .In fact ,more couples are sharing family tasks than ever befor ,and the
movement toward sharing has been especially signficant full-time dual –earner
couples .
Most pervious literature on the division of work began with the naïve assumption
that the massive gender rearrangements that began in the 1960s would, unlike any
other major social transformation in history , have instantaneous results
.Researchers therefore id not take a sufficently long view of change over time. Our
ongoing studies ofcouple relationships reveal instead that chane has been
continuous and significant ,not merely in yourger couples who begin their
relationsip with more flexible ideas about gender , but also I order couples where
the wife has worked long enough to chane her husband’s values and behaviors .We
believe that the transformation of marriage that has occurred in the comparatively
short period of 40 years is too great a break form the pasy to be dismissed as a
slow evolution that has not fundamentally changed family dynamics .Men and
women many not be fully equal yet, but the rules of the game have been
profoundly and irreversibly changed .
