CHAPTER – ELECTRICITY
CONTENT:-
1.Resistance of a system of Resistance
RESISTANCE OF A SYSTEM OF RESISTANCE
Conductor or resistors can be connected with one another in
three ways –
• In series combination
• In parallel combination
• In series- parallel combination
RESISTANCE CONNECTED IN SERIES
Two or more conductors are said to be connected in series if
they are connected one after the other such that the same
current flows through each conductors when some potential
difference is applied across the combination.
Equivalent resistance of the series combination of resistance
NoFig – Resistor in Series
Let I current be flowing through each resistance and V be the
jipotential difference across the combination of resistance.
If V1 ,V2,V3 be the potential difference across the combination
of resistance R1,R2,R3 respectively.
The potential difference across the three resistors are produced
by the source of potential difference V of the circuit, the cell.
Therefore,
V = V1 + V2 + V 3
A/ c to Ohm’s law,
V1= IR1 ,V2 = IR2, V3=IR3
Or, V = IR1 + IR2+ IR3
Or, V = I ( R1+ R2 + R3 )
Let Rs be the effective resistance of series combination of R1
,R2, & R3
Then V = IRs
Hence equation becomes
IRs = I (R1+ R2 + R3)
Or, Rs= R1+ R2 + R3
Features of Series combination of Resistors
• The net resistance of the combination is equal to the sum
of the resistances of the individual conductors.
• The current flowing through each conductor is the same.
RESISTORS CONNECTED IN PARALLEL
Two or more resistors are said to be connected in parallel if the
same potential difference exists across these resistors.

Let V be the applied potential difference .The current I dream

from the cell divides into three parts I1, I2 ,I3 .
Therefore, I = I1+ I2 + I3 …….(I)
A/C to Ohm’s law
V= I R
Or, I = V / R
Therefore, I1 = V/ R1
I2 = V / R2
I3 = V/ R3
Now eq (1) becomes
I = V/R1 + V/R2 + V/ R3
Or, I = V [1/R1+ 1/R2 + 1/R3]………..(ii)
If Rp = effective resistance of the parallel combination of R1 ,
R2 & R3.
Therefore, I = V/ Rp
Hence,. V/Rp= V/ R1+ V / R2 + V/ R3
V/Rp = V ( 1/R1+1/ R2 + 1/ R3)
Or, 1/Rp = I/ R1 + 1/R 2 + 1/ R3
• When two resistors are parallel,
Rp = I/R1+1/R2
= R1R2/R1+R2
Features of parallel combination of Resistors
• The sum of the reciprocal of the resistances of the
individual conductors is equal to the reciprocal of the net
resistance of the combination.
• Different amount of current flows through different
resistances.
• The potential difference across each conductor is equal
to the voltage applied across the parallel combination of
the conductors.
