EXERCISE #5.

2
Analyzing media of art

Instruction: On the box below, you draw the logo of USM. In drawing the
logo of USM, you list down the media of art that you used in making the
artwork. What are the forms of art that you observe in your drawing? Are
there any symbols? What meaning do they communicate? Write your answer
on the space provided.

The only media of art I used in drawing the USM logo is a

graphite pencil, specifically Sketching Drawing Pencil (HB point). I used HB
point type of graphite pencil because the weight of the marks or the lines it
produces are not too thick and not too thin, simply means it is in between.
Graphite pencils produce shiny metallic grey or black marks that are easily
erased, but otherwise it has resistance to moisture. Aside from the medium
of art used in creating this work, I have observed the use of diagonal lines
placed as a background for the symbols in the seal and curved lines, simply
repetitive and wavy, in creating the border of the logo. I observe also that
the color of the drawing is composed of shades of grey and black only and
the composition of the work is close up to see clearly every details.
In the USM seal, a right hand represents the all-out effort of the
administration, faculty, staff, and students to pursue excellence in the four-
fold functions of the University, namely: Instruction, Research, Extension,
and Resource Generation as symbolized by the four lighted candles that it
firmly holds. Mindanao map shows the extent of its service and impact to the
country. An open book symbolizes the pursuit for truth and knowledge, at
the left is “MIT”, the old name of the University while at the right is the
present day “USM”. The inscription “1952” represents the year the University
was established. A spur gear depicts the halo that surrounds the four lighted
candles which exude the progress in commerce and industry. Finally, a pair
of corn leaves panicle of palay, and a microscopic and a laboratory flask
emblem the two major fields of the University, namely: agriculture and
science and technology.
