A VIDEO ANALYSIS
ON WHY DO I HIKE?

After watching the video, answer the following questions:

1. Did you learn anything from this video? If you did, what was it? Cite around 5
learning benefits in hiking. (2 points each)

o Hiking helps us have hope for humanity: One of the greatest things I loved about the
community in hiking is that you seek to help each other and treat each other better. I
guess it is because they must have realized that they were there for others and not
only for themselves. I saw that hiking made them selfless and saw more into the
goodness of humanity rather than its weaknesses.
o Hiking can help you have mental stability: I realize that in this world we live in, it
seems as though we have so many things to do, to accomplish and to finish and it
stops us from finding a good place to rest and be ourselves. I realized that having
some time to think while in the wild with nature as your only audience help a person
think less of what others may think of them and more on what they think of
themselves.
o There is more INCLUSION in hiking: This world is divided in many ways and one of the
greatest conflicts nowadays can be found in the roots of division, racisim and
prejudice. Hiking and meeting with people you haven’t met and never even knew
possibly is a great way of seeing others as an equal and as a companion you that
would help you along the way. Hiking helps a person rethink a person’s values and
beliefs and think for themselves if it’s really right and it encourages a more open
minded environment.
o To be grateful and non-abusive with nature: God himself has commanded us that we
must not use the animals and fowls of the air needlessly. I believe it same goes with
our mountains and valleys. These places give us a glimpse of true paradise and taking
it away needlessly is a waste and a tragedy to those who would never get a chance to
see it. We must enjoy and explore these natural and uninterrupted places of nature
and keep it safe.
o Hiking is an unpopular medicine to the soul: As I heard how these people describes
different aspects of hiking and its beauty I find it quite interesting that almost every
single one of them seem to have found refuge in the hiking community. They were
able to heal themselves, to see a better of themselves and other people and most
importantly it gave them a place where no one would stop them from who they really
want to be.

2. The resolution of the film teaches a lesson. How can you apply the lesson in the
video to your own life? (5 points)
The films want to helps us know that life is more than just making money, studying all
the time and getting engulfed in the busyness of the world. It showed us the power of taking
a break and enjoying the simplest things nature can offer us. It shows us that nature shows
that the gold we describe as time is more bountiful in nature as we hike. It shows us the most
authentic qualities of life we can in nowise see if we did not appreciate the natural things of
the world.
We can apply this lesson by taking break by enjoying our time with our family at
home, in the province or join clubs or organizations that devote their spare time to camping
and hiking. The stress of living in this world and worrying about too many things is dangerous

to our health and it may lead us to underappreciate or loose the chance of seeing the beauty
of this life. We must start to change our way of thinking that making more money or sleeping
late to finish work is the purpose of our life. We must find a time and place to rest, to reflect
and to learn more about ourselves and the true colors of humanity and nature.

3. What was the strongest emotion that you felt when watching the video? (5
points)
I felt nostalgic with the beautiful parts of nature that was shown in the video. It is not
my home and I have never been there but what I missed is the pine trees in Baguio that
surrounds our home and every morning felt so fresh, slow and beautiful. I was born in a place
in Baguio that is surrounded by nature and it was beautiful and I feel a little bad for taking
those mornings for granted. Nature made me feel like I’m going home and it makes me feel
like I’m in just the right place.
I’ve done some hiking before and this documentary made me want to go back and
stare at those mountains near the flowing river. It reminded of how beautiful it was to be in
nature. It felt as though I was looking at a painting in real life and it was perfect.

4. What motivates the narrator to answer the question “Why Do I Hike”? What did
this motivation have to do with the theme of the film? (10 points)
The narrator mentions that he was nearly at the end of his hiking career and he sees
that before that end comes it is important that he finds the answer to the question ‘Why do I
hike’. The motivation was the whole point of the film and it helped build up an organized
sequence on all the possible answers to the question. His motivation also helped the film
create an atmosphere and mood that would help the viewers empathize with what those
hikers feel as they hike.
