Monsoon rains trigger

soil erosion in
Baguio(August 12)
Thirteen days of intense monsoon or habagat left Baguio City with 10
incidences of soil erosion leading to five cases of collapsed structures, three
landslides and an overflowing canal. Heavy rains also affected six electrical
and communication lines including three traffic and street lights. Over 15
motor and vehicular accidents were also reported as thick fog enveloped
the city causing zero visibility. While the rains eased by August 16, several
major thoroughfares inbound for BaguIO City remains closed to motorist
due to landslides, road cuts and road closures.

1999 Cherry Hills

landslide
Cherry Hills subdivision was home to hundreds of families paying-
off low cost, concrete houses. The subdivision was owned and
developed by Tirso Santillan, president of Philjas Corporation.
The subdivision was located in Antipolo, Rizal and was situated
in an elevated terrain cut along the perches of the Sierra Madre
mountains. Besides its location on the mountain cuts, Cherry Hill
was flanked by two subdivision on its either sides. The eastern
summit is at elevation of 255 meters while the western side is at
elevation of 233 meters. The subdivision cut from the mountain
side is approximately 26 meters at its deepest. The subdivision
encompasses five hectares with paved roads. The subdivision
consisted of light-roofed one or two-storey houses with hollow
block wall construction that are either single-detached or row
houses. Before the landslide occurred, several residents
evacuated to the nearby town when cracks began manifesting on the
walls of their houses. Tell-tale signs about a possible impending
slide was rumored, and ominous signs of changes in elevation and
ground movements have been observed. At around 7:30 pm, on August
3, 1999, the landslide occurred,
Assessment of Community
Vulnerability to Riverbank
Erosion in Esperanza, Agusan
Del Sur, Philippines
As a natural phenomenon, most rivers constantly undergo a series of
erosion processes along their banks. Erosion, could be triggered by
anthropogenic activities. This study assessed the vulnerability of
selected communities in the Municipality of Esperanza, Agusan del Sur,
Philippines. Results showed that barangay Crossing Luna was most
vulnerable in terms of sensitivity, exposure and adaptive capacity. On
the other hand, riverbanks of barangay Dakutan and Crossing Luna are
more vulnerable to erosion. In general, Crossing Luna was found to be
the most vulnerable among the three communities with a combined
index of 0.02. The study also showed that the LVI is a relevant tool for
decision making in determining which community needs most help in
times of calamity due to riverbank erosion.
Soil erosion in Watson land in the
Philippines causes by legal and illegal
loggers
In 1960 when Watson land in the Philippines he sensed the threat
and he started to warn people about the deforestation and soil
erosion. He was the former director of the Mindanao Baptist Rural
Life Center (MBRLC) Foundation, Inc., a non-government
organization based in Kinuskusan, Bansalan, and Davao del Sur. But
then people started laughing and told him that “We’re never going to
run out of trees!” Then after that the people started to recognize that
Watson insights was true. It is because the government accepts the
thought of Watson to be relevant. Philippines was once 95% covered
by tropical rainforests long ago. But then in the year of 1990-2005
one third of countries rainforest was destroyed. Now the
deforestation rate is 2% per year, 20% drop from 1990’s rate of
deforestation. When Watson discovered that the cause of soil erosion
is the legal and illegal loggers. The effects of this were low
productivity and hunger. The ones that is cutting the trees are the
ones who doesn’t know soil erosion exist.
“Most of these farmers don’t have a vision to see five or 10 years down
the line,” Watson said. “Most live for one more day, and don’t lift
their head up. They’re not thinking about erosion. It’s `What can I get
out of the land today, right now?”‘
The most important resource in farming is Soil, which takes time to
build up. 2.5 centimeters of rich topsoil takes 200 to 1,000 years to
form. But now we are losing 2.5 centimeters of topsoil every 16 years,
faster than it can be replaced. “Soil is related to the earth much as the
rind is related to an orange,” explains an American geologist. “It is the
link between the rock core of the earth and the living things on its
surface. It is the foothold for the plants we grow. Therein lies the
main reason for our interest in soil.” Soil erosion is a type of
landscape forming process. Some mountains wear down to deposit
some soil to form plains, plateaus, valleys, river flats, and deltas. This
is called natural erosion. In the Philippines, “soil erosion is now the
most serious environmental problem,” said by Dr. Eduardo
Paningbatan, of the University of the Philippines at Los Banos.
BAYUGAN LA TRINIDAD BENGUET SOIL
EROSION- Were digging a deep hole when
one side of the excavation collapsed -JULY
3 2015
One construction worker died while another was injured when they
got buried during an accident at a construction site located in
Buyagan, La Trinidad, Benguet on Friday morning (July 3). The men
were digging a deep hole when one side of the excavation collapsed
burying the men in People who saw the erosion immediately called
for help. The rescue team was composed of members of the La
Trinidad police, the La Trinidad fire department, the Benguet
Chapter of the Philippine National Red Cross, concerned residents of
barangay Buyagan, and other volunteers. The two men were dug out
from the excavation and rushed to the nearby Benguet General
Hospital (BGH).According to a post on the Facebook page of the
Benguet Chapter of the Philippine National Red Cross, only one of the
two construction workers survived. The other one was declared dead
on arrival at the hospital. One onlooker theorized that because the
excavation is exposed to the elements, the soil around it may have
been softened by the rains during the last few days which led to its
collapse. The man who died has been identified as Drilon Pucay from
Caliking, Atok, Benguet. The one
who was injured is Godfrey Leon
from Pudong, Kapangan, Benguet.
