Assignment#3 Questions
3.1. Explain the difference between attribute control charts and variable control
charts.

• Usually an attribute describes the item: height, width, weight, color, font, font
size, etc. Variables are typically considerably more dynamic and are
commonly utilized for computation: a circle area, anything true or untrue,
counters, speed, identification identifiers, descriptions, etc. In plain terms,
control of characteristics is at the limit, control of variables within the limit.
For data generated by each idea, data characteristics are discreet whereas data
is continuous for variables.

3.2. Select three service companies or organizations you are familiar with and indicate
how process control charts could be used in each.

1. Food Corp., Jollibee. The objective of a process control chart is to

determine the top and bottom limits of acceptable results in the face of
normal variance.
2. X & R control chart ( Mean & Range chart): Data observed from
various are plotted on based on range and median.
3. U chart ( for calculating absentism calculation)

Control charts are basically graphs which are used by companies in

various industries to study the evolution or change in a business
process over time. The companies keep a track of the patterns traced
by the control charts to develop the process strategy for future

The various patterns in control charts are as follows:

o Freak pattern:

➢ special cause situation

➢ Results from causes having large effect
➢ Frequency of occurrence is quite minimal

o Drift pattern:

➢ Current process value is dependent on the previous process state’s

value
➢ Total process variability of this pattern is quite high
➢ Can increase the overall cost of system
o Cycle pattern:

➢ The most common pattern

➢ Based on the time of observation of the system
➢ Caused when the normal inputs or methods of a process are modified

o Mixture pattern

➢ When data from 2 control charts are plotted on the same system
➢ The combination of patterns may be erroneous in nature
➢ Steps must be taken to solve such a pattern

3.3. Select a local fast-food restaurant, retail store, grocery store, or bank, and identify
the different processes that control charts could be used to monitor.

➢ McDonald
Control charts are one of the tools being used in Operational excellence. They
are basically applied for the purpose of providing valuable data to create a
“baseline process performance, monitor and control process performance”
(Stagliano, 2004 p. 90). They can also be used in measurement systems to be
evaluated and multiple processes can also be compared. Practically, control
charts can be utilized in any aspect of operations that can be attributed to
“process characterization and analysis” (Stagliano, 2004 p. 90). Control
charts not simply provide routine data, but its main use is for stakeholders or
managers analyze if there are certain variations that may be interpreted as
“in-control” if the process data points shows “random causes” or
“out-of-control” if the specific process has a combination of variations that
was caused by both “random and special causes” (SQCOnline, 2010)
