FRUIT VEGETABLES

- TOMATO

Tomato,  is an herbaceous annual in the family Solanaceae grown for its edible fruit.
The plant can be erect with short stems or vine-like with long, spreading stems. The stems
are covered in coarse hairs and the leaves are arranged spirally. The tomato plant produces
yellow flowers, which can develop into a cyme of 3–12, and usually a round fruit (berry)
which is fleshy, smoothed skinned and can be red, pink, purple, brown, orange or yellow in
color. The tomato plant can grow 0.7–2 m (2.3–6.6 ft) in height and as an annual, is
harvested after only one growing season. Tomato may also be referred to as love apple and
originates from South America. 

- EGGPLANT
Eggplant,  is a tropical, herbaceous, perennial plant, closely related to tomato, in the family
Solanaceae which is grown for its edible fruit. The plants has a branching stem and simple, long,
flat. coarsely lobed leaves which are green in color and are arranged alternately on the branches.
The leaves can measure 10 to 20 cm (4–8 in) long and 5 to 10 cm (2–4 in) broad. The plant
produces purple flowers which are 3–5 cm (1.2–2.0 in) in diameter. The fruit is a large, fleshy ovoid
berry which can reach 40 cm (15.7 in) in length, with glossy smooth skin and numerous small seeds.
The color of the fruit is variable and can be white, green, yellow, purple or black. Eggplants can
reach up to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in height and although they are perennial plants, they are most commonly
grown as annuals. Eggplant may also be referred to as aubergine or guinea squash and originates
from the Indian subcontinent.

- BELL PEPPER
Bell pepper,  is a cultivar group of annual or perennial plants in the family Solanaceae grown for
their edible fruits. Bell pepper plants are short bushes with woody stems that grow brightly colored
fruits. The alternating leaves are elliptical, smooth edged, and come to a distinct point. The plant
produces white or purple bell-shaped flowers which are 2.5 cm (1 in) in diameter. Red, yellow,
purple, or brown fruit are produced each season about 3-6 weeks after flowering. Pepper plants can
grow 1 m (3.3 ft) tall and are usually grown as annuals in temperate regions for only one growing
season. Bell pepper may be referred to as red pepper, yellow pepper or green pepper and is believed
to have originated in Central and South America.

- GREEN BEANS
Green bean, is an herbaceous annual plant in the family Fabaceae which is grown as a
pulse and green vegetable. The green bean can be bushy, vine-like or climbing depending on
the variety being grown. The leaves grow alternately on the stems, are green in color and are
divided into 3 oval leaflets with smooth edges. The leaves can grow 6–15 cm (2.4–5.9 in)
long and 3–11 cm (1.2–4.3 in) wide. The common bean produces white, pink, lilac or purple
flowers which are approximately 1 cm (0.4 in) in diameter, and bean pods 8–20 cm (3.1–7.9
in) long and 1–1.5 cm (0.4–0.6 in) wide which can range in color from green to yellow.

- CELERY
Celery is usually eaten cooked as a vegetable or as a delicate flavouring in a variety of stocks, casseroles,
and soups. Celery has a long fibrous stalk tapering into leaves. It has wide parsley-like green leaves and
thick, juicy, ribbed stalks that join at a common base above the root. Celery, at its best, has a juicy and
crunchy flesh with a mild salty flavor. Although celery is most often used for its stalks, its leaves are edible
as well and have a concentrated celery-flavor.
- SPINACH
Spinach is a herbaceous plant whose leaves, green and arranged in rosette, are eaten raw or cooked. The
leaves have an oval shape and are wrinkled; they can be whole or sawed. It is a very nutritious, tasteful and
easy-to-digest plant.

Like most of the leafy vegetables, it has a great content of water and a low percentage of proteins,
carbohydrates and lipids. It stands out for its high nutritional richness, since its vitamin and mineral content

is higher than the rest of vegetables.

- BROCCOLI - Broccoli, is an edible flower heads which are used as a


vegetable. The broccoli plant has a thick green stalk, or stem, which
gives rise to thick, leathery, oblong leaves which are gray-blue to green
in color. The plant produces large branching green flower heads
covered with numerous white or yellow flowers.

- CAULIFLOWER

The cauliflower is a vegetable that belongs to the cabbage family. The part that one consumes is the flower
or inflorescence, which is round and big, usually white. It can be presented in many ways, both raw and
cooked. It is an important source of vitamins and minerals. In addition, it contributes with fibber and it is
low in calories.
