The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002 adopted the Johannesburg

Declaration on Sustainable Development. It builds on previous declarations made at the

1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm and the 1992
Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The Declaration commits the world's nations to construct a humane, equitable, and
sustainable global society that recognizes the need for human dignity for all. They are
determined to ensure that our rich diversity is used for constructive collaboration for
change and the success of our common sustainable development goals. They both agree
that private-sector corporations must enforce corporate accountability, which must take
place in a transparent and stable regulatory environment. They understand that long-term
development implies a long-term perspective and broad participation in policy
development, decision-making, and implementation at all levels. As social partners, they
will continue to work for stable partnerships with all major groups, while respecting each of
their independent and important roles.

More effective, democratic, and accountable international and multilateral institutions are
required to achieve our sustainable development goals.
