Gender-based violence is one of the most widespread human rights abuses globally and refers to harm against someone based on their gender. It includes psychological, physical, and sexual violence and can have serious long-term health impacts for survivors. The Philippines has recognized gender-based violence as a women's human rights issue over the past decade. Acts of gender-based violence violate human rights principles like the rights to life, health, freedom from torture, and freedom of opinion. Survivors are preferred to "victims," and perpetrators are those who inflict violence against others. Addressing both survivors and perpetrators is important for prevention and response efforts related to gender-based violence.
