Title: Addition and Subtraction of Similar Fraction

I. Introductory Concept:

Fractions are part of the whole and of different kinds. They can be added or subtracted
in different ways. There are fractions with the same denominators which are called similar
fractions. In this lesson, you will learn how to add and subtract similar fractions. The
activities allow you to explore various ways in adding and subtracting similar fractions.

II. Learning Skills

MELC: Visualizes addition and subtraction of similar fractions
Performs addition and subtraction of similar fractions (MNAS-IIg-83)

III. Learning Activities

Fraction – shows a part of a whole or a set.

Similar Fractions -are fractions whose denominators are the same.
Lowest Term – the form of a fraction in which the numerator and denominator have no
factor in common except 1.

Similar factions are fractions whose denominators are the same. Below are examples of
similar fractions.

1 2 3 4 5 numerator
6 6 6 6 6
same denominator

Learning Situation1

2
Shania bought a pizza for snacks. She divided the pizza into eight equal parts. She ate
8
4
of it and shared of it to her friends. How many parts of pizza they have eaten
8
altogether?
Who bought pizza? What values did Shania had shown? Do you also share food to your
friends? Let us know what part of pizza was eaten. First, let us make an illustration with 8
parts since both the denominators of the two fractions is 8.

How many parts are colored? There are 6 parts colored. So, by just adding the colored parts
6
we arrived on .
8

Learning Situation 2

In subtracting similar fractions, subtract the numerators and write the difference over the
common denominator.

5 3 2
- =
10 10 10

2
 Change the answer to lowest term if possible. To changeto lowest terms, divide it by
10
the Greatest Common Factor (GCF). The GCF of 2 and 10 is 2, so

2 2 1 2 1
÷ =
10 2 5
Therefore the lowest term of 10 is 5

Let us try to subtract similar fraction

10 2 10−2 8
- = = Subtract the numerator
12 12 12 12
Copy the denominator
8
This is still to be reduced to lowest term since both the numerator and denominator are
12
2
still divisible by 4. So the final answer is

Practice Task 2

Find the difference: Write your answers in lowest terms if possible.

5 3

4.) 20 - 20 =
5 2
5.) 8 - 8 =

Practice Task 3

Read each problem then solve. Use drawings to help you.

Rico spent hour playing Mobile Legends with his phone. John spent hour. Who
16 16
spent more time in playing video game? By how much more?
Draw your illustration inside the box.

IV. Rubric for Scoring
