LESSON NO. 1: ADDING AND SUBRACTING FRACTIONS

CONTENT STANDARD:
 demonstrates understanding of the four fundamental
operations involving fractions and decimals
LEARNING COMPETENCIES
 adding and subtract simple fractions and mixed numbers without or with
regrouping
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
1. add and subtract fractions without regrouping
2. add and subtract fractions with regrouping
3. solve routine and non-routine problems involving addition and/or
subtraction of fractions and

Addition- is bringing two or more numbers (or things) together to make a new total.
Fraction- simply tells us how many parts of a whole we have.
Grouping- the act or process of combining in groups.
Numerator-  number above the line in a common fraction showing how many of the
parts indicated by the denominator are taken, for example, 2 in 2/3.
Denominator- the number below the line in a common fraction; a divisor.

Pencil, Eraser, Paper and Module.

Enumerate the following:

1. What is numerator?
2. What is denominator?

Think and Understand

Let us show addition of fractions on the number line.

You can also draw a mathematical

model to add similar fractions 4
.

4 3
4 4
So, 4 fourths and 3 fourths is 7 fourths. That is,

4 3 4+3 7
+ = =
4 4 4 4

To add similar fractions, just add the numerators and put the
sum over the common denominator:
Simplify the sum when it is necessary. That is why:
4 3 7 3
+ = =1

To subtract similar or like fractions, just subtract the numerators like whole
numbers and then write the difference over the common denominator of the fractions.
Simplify the difference when needed.

Example: - = =1
4 4 4 4

For dissimilar or unlike fractions, change them first to similar fractions by

looking for equivalent fractions. To get the equivalent fractions, find the least common
denominator (LCD) of the fractions. After the fractions have become similar, add or
subtract as usual.
Example: 1. Find the LCM of 2 and 3. LCM is 2 x 3 = 6
1 3 2. Get the equivalent fractions, using the LCD or

2 6 = =
2 6 3 6

2 6 1 sum.
+ = =1

To add unlike fractions, change them first to similar fractions before adding them. Thus,

divided by 8 and 6. Then use that number as denominator when you change fractions

and into similar fractions.
6

1. Find the LCM of 8 and 6.

8= 2 x 2 x 2
6=2x3
LCM= 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 24
2. Get the equivalent fractions, using the LCD or 24.
3. Subtract the numerators of the similar fractions

Read and answer each.

LESSON NO. 2: ADDING AND SUBRACTING MIXED NUMBER
LEARNING OUTCOME
1. Add and subtract mixed numbers without regrouping
2. Add and subtract mixed numbers with regrouping
3. Solve routine and non-routine problems involving addition and/or
subtraction of mixed numbers
4. Create problems (with reasonable answers) involving addition and/or
subtraction of mixed numbers.

Think and Understand

Quick Definition: A Mixed Fraction is a

whole number and a fraction combined,
3
such as  1
4

To make it easy to add and subtract them, just convert to Improper Fractions
first:

ADDING MIXED FRACTION
I find this is the best way to add mixed fractions:
 convert them to Improper Fractions
 then add them (using Addition of Fractions)
 then convert back to Mixed Fractions
3 1
Example: What is  2   +  3 ?

When you get more experience you can do it faster like this example:
5 3
Example: What is 3 +1
8 4

SUBTRACTING MIXED FRACTION

Just follow the same method, but subtract instead of add:
