SESSION 6&7

MULTIPLICATION OF BINOMIAL TO BINOMIAL

HOOK

Review:

1. 2x3 • -7x4 = -14x7

2. 2 (3x + 7) = 6x + 14
3. 9x (2x2 – 7x - 5) = 18x3 – 63x2 – 45x

On the previous lesson, we discussed the multiplication of monomial to polynomial. We used the
distributive method on that particular kind of given. On this lesson, we’ll discuss the multiplication of binomial
to another binomial.

ENGAGE

On multiplication of binomial to another binomial, we still use the distributive method. Since our given has two
terms, we will distribute twice.

Example 1:

GIVEN (4x + 5) (3x – 2)

Use distributive method 4x(3x – 2) + 5(3x – 2)

Combine Like Terms 12x2 – 8x + 15x – 10

Final Answer 12x2 + 7x – 10

Example 2:

GIVEN (9x - 3) (7x – 4)

Use distributive method 9x(7x – 4) - 3(7x – 4)

Combine Like Terms 63x2 – 36x - 21x + 12

Final Answer 63x2 – 57x + 12

For you to remember how to distribute two terms, there’s a special method being used on multiplication of
binomial to another binomial. That is the FOIL Method. FOIL stands for:

F – First
O – Outer
I – Inner
L - Last
Let us use FOIL Method on the next examples.

Example 3:

Given (2x + 5) (3x + 8)

F (First) (2x + 5) (3x + 8)

6x2

O (Outer) (2x + 5) (3x + 8)

6x2 + 16x

I (Inner) (2x + 5) (3x + 8)

6x2 + 16x + 15x

L (Last) (2x + 5) (3x + 8)

6x2 + 16x + 15x + 40

Combine Like Terms 6x2 + 16x + 15x + 40

FINAL ANSWER 6x2 + 31x + 40

For you to understand it better, let us use some illustrations.

Example 5:

Example 6:

(x + 2) (x – 5)

Example 7: Kindly refer to pages 212 -213 of your math book

(Next Century Mathematics, 2nd Edition)
(x – 9) (4x – 7)

Example 8:

(2x + 3y) (6x - 7y)

Another method to use in multiplying two binomials is the box theorem. On the box theorem, we will use the
concept of multiplication table. Let us follow the step by step process of solving the given using BOX
THEOREM.

Example 9:

GIVEN: (2x – 4) (3x + 5) =

Step 1: Draw a box and divide it into 2 rows and two columns since we have two terms on each given.

Step 2: Place the given on the sides of the box. Make sure that each term on the given occupies one row or
column.

Step 3: Fill out the boxes by multiplying the terms aligned on each box.

FINAL ANSWER: 12x2 – 2x - 20
