LESSON: Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

I. TIME FRAME: 1 Hour

II. OVERVIEW OF THE LESSON:

 In this lesson, the learners will be able to evaluate algebraic expressions through
substituting values to variables and simplifying numerical expressions.

III. LEARNING COMPETENCIES:

The learners should be able to:

a. replace or substitute specified numerical values to variables;
b. perform the order of operations GEMDAS (Grouping, Exponent, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, and Subtraction) in the expression; and
c. simplify numerical expressions within the order of operations.
IV. LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the lesson, the learner is able to:

Understanding: explain the order of operations applied on algebraic expressions;
Evaluating: evaluate algebraic expressions for the given values of the variables; and
Valuing: appreciate the key concepts of algebraic expressions applied in real life
situations.
V. LESSON OUTLINE:

A. PRESENTATION (EXPLORE)

 MOTIVATION
MATHEMAGIC
 Before the activity begins, the class will be divided into Nine Groups.
 Mathematics is governed by a fixed set of principles. Using Mathematics in magic
tricks stimulates eagerness and critical thinking among students to solve. The
following algebraic expressions and procedures will be applied in the
Number Mind-Reading:
10 x 2
1.
5
 x
Procedures: Choose a number from One to Ten, Multiply the number

by 10, Divide it by 5, Multiply it by 2, and Divide the answer to your original number.

10 x 2 10
Answer: “4”; Solution:
5
 x
=
5
 2=2 2=4
3x
2.
x
 4 + 1 Procedures: Choose a number from One to Ten, Multiply the

number by 3, Divide it by your number, Multiply it by 4, and Add the answer to 1.

3x
Answer: “13”; Solution:
x
 4 + 1 = 3  4 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13

B. ACTUAL ENGAGING ACTIVITIES (FIRM – UP)

 INSTRUCTION/DELIVERY
 The two algebraic expressions will be presented and students are asked to:
 Substitute any values to the variables and simplify the expression
10 x 2
5
 x
. It will result to the constant number “4”.

 Substitute any values to the variables and simplify the expression

3x
x
 4 + 1. It will result to the constant number “13”.
Leading Questions:
1. How did you feel when your number was guessed?
2. Given the algebraic expressions, what did we do to check whether our answers
were correct or satisfied in these expressions?
 SUBSTITUTE
 SIMPLIFY
 EVALUATING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS
 Substitute the given specific values for the variables.
 Simplify the resulting numerical expression.
Example 1:
If x = -2 and y = -4, what is 3x – 2y + 4?
Solution: 3x – 2y + 4 = 3(-2) – 2(-4) + 4 = -6 +8 + 4 = 2 + 4 = 6
Example 2:
Evaluate |a2 – 2ab – 3b2| if a = 2 and b = 5
Solution: |a2 – 2ab – 3b2| = |(2)2 – 2(2)(5) – 3(5)2| = |(2)2 – 2(2)(5) – 3(25)| = |4 -20 – 75|
= |-16 – 75| = |-91| = 91

C. UNWRAPPING (DEEPEN)

 PRACTICE
Individual Seatwork with Group Discussion

Identify the following expressions:

1. 4s, where s = 9 2. rt, where r = 80, t = ½ 3. r2, where r = 6
4. 2l + 2w, where l = 2.1, w = 1.2 5. xy+2, where x = 5, y = 3
THE ALGEBRA GAME
o A multiple-choice game, inspired by the game show “Who wants to be a
Millionaire”, for individual students to solve for 1 minute and to be discussed
in the group for another minute. This activity aims to encourage students’
critical thinking within time constraint and group collaboration. When the timer
ends, all representatives in each group shall stand up and raise their one-
fourth sheet of paper with the letter of choice written. The point-system will be
headed by the teacher.

Evaluate each expression if a = 2, b = -1, c = 3, and d = -5

1. a + b + c + d 2. –a + b – c + d 3. ab + cd 4. ad – bc 5. ba + dc

a+b+ c b+d
6. bc - da 7.8.
d ac
 ENRICHMENT/VALUES INTEGRATION

220 - x w / h2

d/t (4 / 3) r3

(Pictures are shown to let students appreciate more the concept of evaluating
algebraic expressions in real life. Questions are to be pondered and answered
afterwards.)
Guide Questions:
 How can Evaluating Algebraic Expressions contribute to the needs of the society
today?
 Can these contributions help you also? In what situation in your life?
D. LEARNING ASSESSMENT (TRANSFER)

 ASSIGNMENT

o Study the topic “Evaluating Algebraic Expressions” and be ready for a QUIZ next
meeting.
o Answer WRITTEN MATH nos. 11-15 and write it on a ½ crosswise sheet of
paper. Show your Solutions
