Lesson
Addition and Subtraction
2 of Polynomials
Like arithmetic, polynomials can be combined through the processes of
addition and subtraction. Just follow the rules in adding and subtracting
polynomials and you will arrive at the correct solution.

6
What’s In
Let us recall the previous lesson about evaluating algebraic
expressions. To evaluate an algebraic expression, determine its numerical
value by substituting a given set of numbers in place of letters or variables.

Evaluate each algebraic expression if x = 0, y = 1 and z = 3. Solve then write

your answer on the separate sheet/s of paper.

1. x + 2y – z

2. (5x +x) + (y +2z)

3. 𝑥 2 –4y + 𝑧 2

4. 10x – 2y +z

𝑥 2+2𝑧

What’s New
Adding Polynomials

Consider the terms 2b and 8b. Since the terms are similar, they can
be combined as 10b.

On the other hand, the terms 4a and 9b cannot be combined since

their literal coefficients are not the same.

7
To add polynomials, simply combine similar terms and proceed as in
addition of monomials. Take note that only similar terms can be
combined.

Subtracting Polynomials
To subtract polynomials having similar terms, the numerical coefficients are
subtracted as in signed numbers, and the literal coefficient is retained.

Recall the rule in subtraction:

For all real numbers a and b, a – b = a + (-b).

What is It

For better understanding on how to add and subtract polynomials,

consider these examples.

Examples:

1. Find the sum of 6x , 10x, and 22x

Arrange first the expressions aligned
Solution: vertically then add the numerical coefficients using
the rule in addition of signed numbers and bring
6x
down the similar literal coefficient.
10x
+ 22x
38x Follow the rules in adding signed numbers.
Remember the integer song in the tune of
“Row, Row, Row Your Boat”

Same signs add and keep

Different signs subtract
Take the sign of the larger number
Then you’ll be exact.
2. Add (m + 2n) and (m – 9n)
Take note also that for every literal
Solution: coefficient (letter or variable) without visible
numerical coefficient (number or constant)
m + 2n
always have 1 beside of it.
+ m – 9n Study the example at the left.
2m – 7n

8
3. Perform (a2 − 2a + 2) + (4a2 − 18)
Arrange the polynomials vertically. Place
Solution: each term aligned to their similar literal
a2 − 2a + 2 coefficient. If the terms are not similar, then
+ 4a2 − 18 they cannot be combined.
𝟐 Copy the terms that do not have the same
𝟓𝐚 − 𝟐𝐚 − 𝟏𝟔
literal coefficients, then arrange according to its
degree.

4. Solve 8x – (-6x) For you to be able to solve the polynomials,

let us first subtract monomial to monomial. Recall
Solution: that monomial is composed of only one term.
(8x) – (-6x) Similar to the addition of polynomials, we
+ ( 6x)
(8x) (–) are going to combine also similar terms. But
here in subtraction, change first the sign of the
subtrahend. We have only two signs: (+) positive
8x and (-) negative sign. So if the sign is positive
+ 6x (+), change it into negative (-) and if the sign is
14x negative (-), change it into positive (+). Then
follow the rules in adding polynomials.

5. Subtract ( 5xy + 8 ) – ( 2xy –9)

Solution: Arrange the polynomial vertically. The

( 5xy + 8 ) – ( 2xy –9) rules in subtracting integers, also apply in
( 5xy + 8 )+(–) (–2xy + 9) subtracting polynomials. Change the signs of the
subtrahend then proceed in addition rule or you
5xy + 8 can add the additive inverse of the subtrahend to
+ –2xy + 9 the minuend. The additive inverse of a
3xy +17 polynomial is obtained by multiplying each of its
terms by -1.

6. Find the difference between (y3 + 5y2 + 20) and (y3 − 12y2 + y + 4).

Solution:
(y 3 + 5y 2 + 20) – ( y 3 − 12y 2 + y + 4)
+ (−y 3 + 12y 2 − y − 4)
(y 3 + 5y2 + 20) (–)

y3 + 5y2 + 20 Take note that the difference between

+ −y + 12y − y − 4
3 2 positive and negative terms with similar
𝟏𝟕𝐲𝟐 − 𝐲 + 𝟏𝟔 numerical and literal coefficient is zero.

9
What’s More

To understand well the lesson in adding and subtracting polynomials,

you need to answer these matching type questions. Match each item in
column A with its corresponding answer in column B. Write the letter of
correct answer on a separate sheet/s of paper.

COLUMN A COLUMN B

1. (5𝑥 2 + 2𝑥) + (3𝑥 2 + 𝑥) A. 5x

2. (−2𝑥 2 + 𝑦) + (4𝑥 2 + 5𝑦) B. 𝑥 2 − 12𝑥

3. (4𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 7) + (−3𝑥 2 − 9𝑥 − 7) C. 10𝑦 2 − 17

4. 10x – (–5x) D. 8𝑥 2 + 3𝑥

5. (9𝑦 2 + 2𝑦 + 11) – (−𝑦 2 + 2𝑦 − 6) E. 2𝑥 2 + 6𝑦

F.15x

G. −6𝑥 2 + 6𝑦

What I Have Learned

In adding and subtracting polynomials, always consider the rules so

that we can easily solve the operations in polynomials.

Rules for Adding Polynomials

To add polynomials, simply combine similar terms. To combine similar

terms, get the sum of the numerical coefficients and copy the same literal
coefficients. If there is more than one term, for convenience, write similar
terms in the same column.

Rules for Subtracting Polynomials

To subtract polynomials, change the sign of the subtrahend then
proceed to the addition rule. Also, remember what subtraction means. It is
adding the negative of the quantity.
