GRADE 8 (QUARTER 1)
MODULE 13

I. Introduction:
Finding the Equation of a Line
You previously learned how to graph a line using any two points,
its slope and a point, and its intercepts. In this module, you will learn
how to find the equation of a line in three different cases: (a) given two
points; (b) given the slope and a point; and (c) given the slope and its
intercept. This is also divided into three sub-modules discussing the
mentioned cases separately with sets of problems where you can apply
the mentioned skills for you to master them.

Lesson 1

Finding the Equation of a Line Given Two Points

Vocabulary List
The following terms will be used in this module; so, it is a head start
that you get to know them.
• Point – an exact location denoted by an ordered pair composed
of 𝑥-coordinate and 𝑦-coordinate in the form (𝑥, 𝑦)
• Equation – comparison of two quantities or expressions using
the equality symbol (=)
• Line – composed of infinite number of points and can be
determined using two points; its equation can be written in the
form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏, 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 = 𝐶, or 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 + 𝐶 = 0

2
After studying this lesson, you should be able to find the equation
of a line given two points.

Learning Activities:

Learning Situation 1:

Vico needs to answer the problem below:

Find the equation of the line passing through the points

(2, 1) and (1, −3).

Vico’s problem focuses on finding the equation of a line given two points
where it is passing through. To answer this kind of problem, you will use
the formula:

Two – Point Form

𝒚 𝒚 𝒚𝟐− 𝒚𝟏 𝒚−𝒚
𝒚 − 𝒚𝟏 = 𝒙 𝟐−−𝒙𝟏 (𝒙 − 𝒙𝟏 ) or = 𝒙−𝒙𝟏
𝟐 𝟏 𝒙𝟐 −𝒙𝟏 𝟏

where 𝒙𝟐 ≠ 𝒙𝟏

Let’s use the formula to answer Vico’s problem as

stated below by following the complete solution given.

Example: Find the equation of a line passing through the points

(2, 1) and (1, −3).

To answer the problem, you need to follow the step-by-step solution

provided for your guide below.

Step 1:

Plot the points on the Cartesian plane and connect them to

illustrate the line that we are looking for.

3
Step 2:
Identify the coordinates:
Let (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) = (2, 1), where 𝑥1 = 2 and 𝑦1 = 1 ;
(𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ) = (1, −3), where 𝑥2 = 1 and 𝑦2 = −3
Step 3:
Substitute the values in the two-point formula:
𝑦2− 𝑦1
𝑦 − 𝑦1 = (𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
𝑥2 −𝑥1
So, we get:
−3−1
𝑦 − 1 = ( 1−2 ) (𝑥 – 2)
Step 4:
Simplify:
−4
𝑦– 1 = (𝑥 – 2)
−1
𝑦 – 1 = 4(𝑥 – 2) Distribute 4 to (𝑥 − 2).
𝑦 − 1 = 4𝑥 − 8 Apply the Addition Property of Equality
by adding 1 to both sides of the
equation.
𝑦 − 1 + 1 = 4𝑥 − 8 + 1 By the property, −1 + 1 will be equal to
zero on the left side of the equation
𝑦 = 4𝑥 – 8 + 1 Combine −8 and 1.
𝒚 = 𝟒𝒙 – 𝟕

Hence, the equation of the line that passes through the two points (2, 1)
and (1, -3) is 𝒚 = 𝟒𝒙 – 𝟕.

If you recall, our answer is written in slope-intercept form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏

where 4 is the slope and -7 is the y-intercept.

4
Let’s have a few more examples with complete
solutions to master this skill.

Learning Situation 2:

The points (2, −6) and (−3, −3) lie on a particular line. What
equation represents the line containing these points?

The problem above can still be solved using the two-point form. By
rephrasing the problem we have the question: Find the equation of the
line containing the points (2, −6) and (−3, −3). The complete solution
is given below:

Step 1:

Locate the points in the Cartesian plane and connect them to

illustrate the line.
𝑦

Step 2:

Identify the coordinates:

Let (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) = (2, −6), where 𝑥1 = 2 and 𝑦1 = −6 ;
5
(𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ) = (−3, −3), where 𝑥2 = −3 and 𝑦2 = −3
Step 3:

Substitute the values in the two-point formula:

𝑦 𝑦
𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 2− 1 (𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
𝑥2 −𝑥1

So, we get:
−3−(−6)
𝑦 − (−6) = { } (𝑥 – 2)
−3−2

Step 4:

Simplify:
−3+6
𝑦+6 = (𝑥 – 2)
−5
3
𝑦+6 = (𝑥 – 2)
−5
3 3
𝑦 + 6 = − 5 (𝑥 – 2) Distribute − 5 to (𝑥 − 2).
3 6
𝑦 +6 = −5𝑥 +5 Apply the Addition Property of Equality
by adding −6 to both sides of the
equation.
3 6
𝑦 + 6 + (−6) = − 5 𝑥 + 5 + (−6) By the property, +6 − 6 will be equal to
zero on the left side of the equation
3 6 6
𝑦 = − 5 𝑥 + 5 + (−6) Combine and (−6).
5
3 𝟐𝟒
𝒚 = − 5 𝑥– 𝟓

3 𝟐𝟒
Finally, the equation that we are looking for is 𝒚 = − 5 𝑥– .

Example 3: Find the equation of the line, whose graph appears below
𝑦
using the highlighted points.

(𝟓, 𝟏)

(−𝟏, −𝟑)

6
Since the graph is already given, you will just solve for the equation by
applying the steps that you have learned. The answer will be:

Step 1:
Identify the coordinates:
Let (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) = (5, 1), where 𝑥1 = 5 and 𝑦1 = 1 ;
(𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ) = (−1, −3), where 𝑥2 = −1 and 𝑦2 = −3

Step 2:
Substitute the values in the two-point formula:
𝑦2− 𝑦1
𝑦 − 𝑦1 = (𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
𝑥2 −𝑥1
So, we get:
−3−1
𝑦−1 = (𝑥 – 5)
−1−5

Step 3:
Simplify:
−4
𝑦−1 = (𝑥 – 5)
−6
2
𝑦−1 = (𝑥 – 5)
3
2 2
𝑦−1 = (𝑥 – 5) Distribute to (𝑥 − 5).
3 3
2 10
𝑦−1 = 𝑥− Apply the Addition Property of Equality
3 3
by adding 1 to both sides of the
equation.
2 10
𝑦−1+1= 𝑥− +1 By the property, −1 + 1 will be equal to
3 3
zero on the left side of the equation.
2 10 10
𝑦 = 𝑥− +1 Combine − and 1.
3 3 3
𝟐 𝟕
𝒚 = 𝒙−
𝟑 𝟑

𝟐 𝟕
The equation of the line that we are looking for is 𝒚 = 𝒙−
𝟑 𝟑

Moving on, you must remember the rules of signs in the

operations on integers as well as on fractions to help you
simplify accurately and arrive at the correct equation. You
may also write your equation either in standard form or
slope-intercept form.

Finding the Equation of a Line Given the Slope and a Point

Vocabulary List
The following terms will be used in this module; so, it is a head start that you
get to know them.
• Point – an exact location denoted by an ordered pair composed of
𝑥 −coordinate and 𝑦 −coordinate in the form (𝑥, 𝑦)
• Slope – the measure of steepness of a line, denoted by letter 𝑚

After studying this lesson, you should be able to find the equation
of a line given the slope and a point.

Learning Activities:

Learning Situation 1:

A line has a slope of 2 and is passing through the point

whose coordinates are (2, −5). What is its equation?

The problem above requires you to find the equation of a line given its
slope and a point where it passes through. This type of problem can be
solved using the point-slope formula below:

Point – Slope Form

𝒚 − 𝒚𝟏 = 𝒎(𝒙 − 𝒙𝟏 )

From the formula above, 𝒎 is the slope of the line while 𝒙𝟏 and 𝒚𝟏 are the
coordinates of the point where the line passes.

Here’s how we can answer the problem.

Follow the steps carefully.

Problem 1: A line has a slope of 2 and is passing through the

point (2, −5). What is its equation?

Step 1:
Graph the line using its slope and the point where it passes
through.

10
𝑦

Step 2:
Identify the given in the problem.
We get the following:
𝑚 = 2; 𝑥1 = 2 and 𝑦1 = −5 ;
Step 3:
Substitute the values in the point-slope formula:
𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
So, we get:
𝑦 − (−5) = 2(𝑥 – 2)
Step 4:
Simplify:
𝑦 + 5 = 2(𝑥 – 2) Distribute 2 to (𝑥 − 2).
𝑦 + 5 = 2𝑥 – 4 Apply the Addition Property of Equality
by adding −5 to both sides of the equation.
𝑦 = 2𝑥 – 4 + (−5)
𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙 – 𝟗

Hence, the equation of the line whose slope is 2 and is passing through the
point (2, −5) is 𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙 – 𝟗.

Again, our answer is written in slope-intercept form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 where 2 the

slope is and −9 is the y-intercept.

Note that in our first problem the slope is an integer, not a

fraction. This time, we’ll answer a problem where the slope is
a fraction.

11
Learning Situation 2:

2
The slope of a line is 3 and it passes through the
point (−4, 3). What is its equation?

Again, the problem above requires you to find the equation of a line given
its slope and a point where it passes through. So, this problem will again
require the point – slope formula, 𝒚 − 𝒚𝟏 = 𝒎(𝒙 − 𝒙𝟏 ).

The solution of the problem follows.

2
Problem 2: A line has a slope is 3 and is passing through the point (−4, 3).
What is its equation?
Step 1:
Graph the line using its slope and the point where it passes through.
𝑦

Step 2:
Identify the given in the problem.
We get the following:
2
𝑚 = 3 ; 𝑥1 = −4 and 𝑦1 = 3 ;
Step 3:
Substitute the values in the point-slope formula: 𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
2
So, we get: 𝑦 − 3 = {𝑥 – (−4)}
3

12
Step 4:
Simplify:
2 2
𝑦−3 = (𝑥 + 4) Distribute 3 to (𝑥 + 4)
3
2 8
𝑦−3 = 𝑥+3
3
2 8
𝑦+3 = 𝑥+3+3 Apply Addition Property of Equality by adding 3
3
to both sides of the equation.
2 8
𝑦 = 𝑥+3+ Simplify.
3

𝟐 𝟏𝟕
𝒚= 𝒙+
𝟑 𝟑
2
Hence, the equation of the line whose slope is 3 and is passing
𝟐 𝟏𝟕
through point (−4, 3) is 𝒚= 𝒙+ .

Lesson 3

Finding the Equation of a Line Given the Slope and its 𝒚- intercept

Photo owned by Jimmy B. Bio Jr.

Vocabulary List
The following terms will be used in this module; so, it is a head
start that you get to know them.
• Slope – the measure of steepness of a line, denoted by 𝑚
• 𝒚 − intercept – value of 𝑦 when 𝑥 = 0, denoted by 𝑏
- point where the line crosses the 𝑦 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠

14
After studying this lesson, you should be able to find the equation of a line
given the slope and its y- intercept.

Learning Activities:
Learning Situation 1:

A line has a slope of 3 and a y-intercept of −4. What is its

equation?

The problem above requires you to find the equation of a line given its
slope and the y-intercept. This type of problem can be solved using the
slope-intercept formula below:

Slope – Intercept Form

𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃

From the formula above, 𝒎 is the slope of the line while

𝒃 is the 𝑦-intercept of the line.

Here’s how we can answer the problem.

Follow the steps carefully.

Example 1: A line has a slope of 3 and a y-intercept of −4. What is its

equation?
Step 1:
Graph the line using its slope and y-intercept.
𝑦

15
Step 2:
Identify the given in the problem. We get the following:
𝑚 = 3; 𝑏 = −4 ;
Step 3:
Substitute the values in the point-slope formula 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏
We have: 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + (−4)
Step 4:
Simplify: 𝒚 = 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟒

Therefore, the equation of the line whose slope ( 𝑚) is 3 and

𝑦-intercept(𝑏) of −4 is 𝒚 = 𝟑𝒙 – 𝟒.

Let’s try another example.

Learning Situation 2:

5
A line has a slope of − 7 and crosses the y-axis at (0,6).
What is its equation?

You have to take note of the problem and examine it thoroughly. At an

instance, you must be able to identify what formula you are going to
use in order to find the equation which is the slope-intercept form.
Following the same steps:
Step 1: Graph the line using the information given.
𝑦

16
Step 2:
Identify the given in the problem.
5 𝟓
It is stated that the slope is − 7 . So, 𝒎 = − 𝟕 .The point where the line
crosses the y-axis is the y-intercept. Therefore, 𝒃 = 𝟔.

Step 3:

Substitute the values in the point-slope formula: 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏

So, we get:
𝟓
𝒚 = −𝟕𝒙 + 𝟔
5
Therefore, the equation of the line whose slope, 𝑚, is − 7 and crosses the y-
𝟓
axis at (0,6) is 𝒚 = − 𝟕 𝒙 + 𝟔.

You can improve your skill in finding the equation of a line given its
slope and its intercept by answering the practice tests below. You
may write your answers in standard form or slope-intercept form.
