EQUATIONS IN QUADRATIC FORM
In the previous modules, you have learned about the different methods of solving
quadratic equations. In this module, you will find that these ways are also necessary to
solve some rational and higher degree equations.
WHAT I KNOW
PPREPREVIER
Find out how much you already know about equations transformable to
!
quadratic form. Write the letter that you think is the best answer to each question on
your answer sheet. Answer all items. After taking and checking this short test, take note
of the items that you were not able to answer correctly and look for the right answer as
you go through this module.

Using any method of finding the zeroes of quadratic equation, solve for the following:
1. 𝑥2 − 9 = 0
2. 𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 6 = 0
3. 6𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 15 = 0
4. 2𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 5 = 0
5. 3𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 4 = 0

GRADE 9

Some equations which are obviously not quadratic in form may be solved using
the same methods as in a quadratic equation after performing a few substitutions or
simplifying the whole equation.
Solution
a. The equation x4 – 7x2 + 12 = 0 can be transformed to quadratic using the law
of exponent. We can see that,
x4 – 7x2 + 12 = 0 ⇒ (x2)2 – 7(x2) + 12 = 0
(x2)2 – 7(x2) + 12 = 0 ⇒ m2 – 7m + 12 = 0
b. In the given equation (x2 – 6x)2 – 2(x2-6x) – 35 = 0, we can clearly see that
(x2 – 6x) is the expression that we need to set into another variable.
Thus, let r = x2 – 6x, then:
(x2 – 6x)2 – 2(x2-6x) – 35 = 0 ⇒ r2 – 2r – 35 = 0
2 1
c. To transform + = 1 to quadratic equation, multiply both sides of the
𝑦+1 𝑦−1
equation by the least common denominator.
2 1
(𝒚 + 𝟏)(𝒚 − 𝟏) ( + ) = (1)(𝒚 + 𝟏)(𝒚 − 𝟏)
𝑦+1 𝑦−1
2(y – 1) + (y + 1) = (y + 1) (y – 1)
2y – 2 + y + 1 = y2 – 1
0 = y2 – 3y
2 1
Thus, + =1 ⇒ y2 – 3y = 0
𝑦+1 𝑦−1
8 4𝑥
Example 2: Given a rational algebraic equation, 𝑥 + = 1+ , what are the values of 𝑥?
𝑥−2 𝑥−2
Solution:
8 4𝑥
(𝑥 − 2) (𝑥 + ) = (1 + ) (𝑥 − 2) Multiply both side by the LCD
𝑥−2 𝑥−2
𝑥(𝑥 − 2) + 8 = (𝑥 − 2) + 4𝑥
𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 8 = 𝑥 − 2 + 4𝑥
2
𝑥 − 2𝑥 − 𝑥 − 4𝑥 + 8 + 2 = 0
𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 + 10 = 0 This is now in quadratic form

You may use factoring to find the solution. What is an extraneous root or
𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 + 10 = 0 solution?
(𝑥 − 5)(𝑥 − 2) = 0 It is a root of a transformed
equation which is not a root of the
Hence, 𝑥 = 5 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = 2 original equation since it was
But 𝑥 = 2 is an extraneous solution. Why? excluded from the domain of the
original equation.

Therefore, 𝑥 = ±√11 , ± 1
Solution: This example will show the method of solving a complicated equation
by using a new variable and substituting it for an expression in the given
equation.
(𝑥 − 1) = 0 𝒐𝒓 (𝑥 + 3) = 0 (𝑥 + 1) = 0 or (𝑥 + 1) = 0

In order to determine whether a certain equation can be solved using the same
method as in quadratic equations, you may do or consider any of the
following:
1. The equation can be written in the form am2 + bm + c = where m
is an algebraic expression.
2. For complicated equations, you can make it simple by replacing a
new variable for an expression in the equation,
3. For the solutions of a rational algebraic equation, you must
simplify first the expression on both sides (includes the removal of
the denominator). This will make you see clearly that the resulting
equation is in quadratic form.
WHAT I CAN DO
Solve the following equations:
4 5
1. − =1
𝑥 𝑥+3
𝑥 2 +1 2𝑥 2 _
2. 2 + 2 =4
𝑥 −3 𝑥 −3
3. (𝑟 2 + 2)2 + (𝑟 2 + 2) − 6 = 0
4. 𝑥 4 − 5𝑥 2 + 4 = 0
5. 𝑥 4 − 3𝑥 2 + 2 = 0

Finding the Average Speed! Read and study the given scenario. Then answer the
questions that follow.
In this lesson, we have found that some equations can be made look like
quadratic equations especially those with higher degree and rational algebraic
equations. Consequently, this can be solved using the same techniques as the quadratic
equations. Think and reflect! What are the other concepts related to these techniques
that can be used particularly in real life situations?

In a water refilling station, the time that a pipe takes to fill a tank is 10 minutes
more than the time that another pipe takes to fill the same tank. If the two pipes are
opened at the same time, they can fill the tank in 12 minutes.
