GRADE 8 (QUARTER 1)
MODULE 3.2
SIMPLIFYING RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

I. Introduction:

Can you still remember how to reduce a fraction to its lowest

term? How about factoring?
In this module you are to learn how to simplify rational
algebraic expressions using the concepts mentioned.

II. Objective:
At the end of this module, you must be able to simplify rational
algebraic expression.

III. Vocabulary List:

Factoring - the process of finding the factors of a given expression

Common Factor – a term which is a factor found in the numerator
and at the same time denominator
Lowest Term – an expression where there is no common factor in the
numerator and denominator

Great! Now you remember how to do factoring. Let’s use this

to simplify rational algebraic expressions.

STEPS IN SIMPLIFYING RATIONAL

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS
NOTE:
A rational algebraic 1. Factor both numerator and
expression is in its lowest term denominator.
if the numerator and 2. Divide the numerator and denominator
denominator have no more by their greatest common factor.
common factors other than 1.
3. Multiply the remaining factors and their
product is the rational algebraic
expression in simplest form.

Let’s study the following examples.

15a2b2
Example 1: Simplify: ;
15ab
3• 5• a • a • b • b
STEP 1: - factor the numerator and denominator
3• 5• a • b

3• 5• a • a • b • b - divide out the common factor

STEP 2:
3• 5• a • b or you can divide the numerator
and denominator by their GCF
multiply the remaining factors and their
STEP 3: ab - product is the rational algebraic expression
in simplest form
2
15a 2b2
Therefore, = ab
15ab

Following the same steps, let us study more examples.

x2 − 25
Example 2: Give the simplest form of: ;
4 x + 20
( x + 5)(x − 5)
STEP 1:
4( x + 5)
STEP 2: x 2 − 25
4 x + 20
x −5 x2 − 25 x − 5
STEP 3: Therefore, =
4 4 x + 20 4

y 2 + 6 xy + 9 x2
Example 3: Express in simplest form
y 2 − 9 x2
( y + 3x)( y + 3x)
STEP 1:
( y + 3x)( y − 3x)
( y + 3x)( y + 3x)
STEP 2:
( y + 3x)( y − 3x)
y + 3x
STEP 3: y 2 + 6 xy + 9 x2 y + 3x
y − 3x Therefore, =
y 2 − 9 x2 y − 3x
x− y
Example 4: Write in lowest term.
y−x

At first glance, there’s no way in which we can factor x − y and

y − x to get a common factor. However, 𝑦 − 𝑥 = −1(−𝑦 + 𝑥 ) =
−1(𝑥 − 𝑦)
So, we will have this solution;
1(𝑥−𝑦)
STEP1:
−1(𝑥−𝑦)
1(𝑥−𝑦)
STEP 2:
−1(𝑥−𝑦)
x− y
1 Therefore = −1
STEP 3: = −1 y−x
−1

5s 2 + 17s −12
Example 5: Simplify
12 −17s − 5s 2

3
Both the numerator and denominator are quadratic trinomials where a > 1.
Factor each term first by using any method you are familiar with. For easier
solution, let’s try the AC Test.

STEP 1: 5s −3
s 5s2 − 3s
5s + 17s −12
2
5s + 17s −12
2
4 20s − 12
= (5s − 3)(s + 4)
Product of the
− 60s 2
first and last
terms

20s − 3s Factors of − 60s 2

3 − 5s
12 −17s − 5s 2
12 −17s − 5s 2
4 12 − 20s
= (3 − 5s)(4 + s)
Product of the s 3s − 5s2
− 60s 2 first and last
terms

− 20s 3s Factors of − 60s 2

5s 2 + 17s −12 (5s − 3)(s + 4) by commutative property we can

STEP 2: =
12 −17s − 5s 2 (3 − 5s)(4 + s) divide out (s+4) and (4+s)

5s − 3 simplify further the expression following

=
3 − 5s the solution in example 4

5s − 3 by commutative property we can rewrite

=
− 1(3 − 5s) (-3+5s), giving us;

5s − 3
=
− 3 + 5s
5s − 3
=
5s − 3

5s 2 + 17s −12
STEP 3: =1
12 −17s − 5s 2
