SIMPLIFYING RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

A fraction is said to be in simplified form when all pair of factors common to the numerator and denominator have been removed.
To simplify a fraction we remove a factor equal to 1. A rational expression is said to be in simplified form when its numerator and
denominator have no common factor other than 1.
*Steps in Simplifying Rational Algebraic Expressions:
1. Factor completely the numerator and denominator.
2.Separate and divide out cancel out common factor’s if there is/are any.
3. Multiply the remaining factors.
Study the examples below:
2
1.  is not in lowest terms,
6
as 2 and 6 have the common factor “2”

But:

1
2.  is in lowest terms,
3
as 1 and 3 have no common factors

Likewise a Rational Expression is in Lowest Terms when the top or numerator and bottom or denominator have no
common factors.
Example: Rational Expressions
1. x3+3x2
2x  is not in lowest terms as x3+3x2 and 2x have the common factor “x”
But:
2. x2+3x
2  is in lowest terms, as x2+3x and 2 have no common factors
3. x2 + x – 6 = ( x – 2)(x + 3) = x – 2 Answer. Note cancel out the same factor from numerator and denominator
x2 – 9 ( x + 3)(x – 3) x+3

4. 3x2 – 12x = 3x (x – 4) = ( x – 4) Note cancel out the same factor from numerator and denominator
6x2 + 3x 3x (2x + 1) (2x + 1)

5. x2 + 4x + 3 = (x + 1)(x + 3) = ( x + 1) Note cancel out the same factor from numerator and denominator
x2 + x – 6 (x – 2)(x + 3) ( x – 2)

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF SIMILAR RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS:
In adding or subtracting similar rational algebraic expression is the same as adding or subtracting similar fraction
Where in you just add or subtract the numerator then simplify to its lowest term.

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF DISSIMILAR RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION.

*To add or subtract dissimilar Rational Algebraic Expressions with different denominators by converting them to similar Rational
expressions by finding the least common denominator (LCD) of the rational expressions.
Steps in finding the LCD:
1.Factor each denominator. Express as powers any factor that occurs more than once.
2.List all distinct factors that appear in any of the denominators. When the same factors that appears in more than one denominator
get the factor with the highest power.
3.Write the product of all these factors. This is the LCD.

Recall the product of two rational numbers
b
and
d
, where a , b , c, and d are real numbers and b≠ 0 and d ≠ 0, is bd

This means that the product is a rational number whose numerator is the product of numerators and whose denominator is the
product of denominators of the two rational numbers.
Consider this problem:

DIVISION OF RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

*To divide Rational Algebraic Expressions
1.Deteremine the reciprocal of the divisor
2.Change the operation from division to multiplication by the reciprocal.
3.Follow steps in multiplication.
1
Recall that two numbers whose product is 1 are called multiplicative inverses or reciprocals. If we multiply the real numbers x and
y
,
x 1 1
y
. This implies that the quotient of x and y is equal to x . . (Note that is the reciprocal of y.)
y ≠ 0, the result is
